Agree with above ... Mets free agency philosophy of overpaying for mid-tier talent and expecting players to live up to paycheck has hurt team by depleting budget. OP is poster boy. Free Agent targets should be difference makers ... complementary players should come from within.

Stick with Murphy instead of Nick Johnson. Stick with Maine or Pelfrey over Wolf or Piniero. Stick with Santos over any of those FA catchers. But when a Beltran or Texiera or Sabathia comes out, be ready to blow it out
to get them.

And if no big time difference maker is available, sit it out.

The Mets pursuit of mid-tier starting pitchers is similiar to their strategy after not pursuing Alex Rodriguez many years ago. The Mets found the premier player on the market to be too expensive, so they decided to spread the wealth around several mid-tier players. The results were disastrous. Those players ended up being Jeromy Burnitz, Roger Cedeno and Mo Vaughn.

Why are the Mets pursuing Randy Wolf, Jason Marquis or Joel Piniero? Don't they already have a starting rotation full of #4 starters?

The Mets needs to zero in on John Lackey and simply get a deal done.

It's going to happen.

Besides Wolf at 3 x $8 looks a lot better than what OP got last year.

Wolf for 3 years is not a good move. Lots of injuries in the past and we would be overpaying for a pitcher that just had his best year in quite some time.
