Read: Paul Lukas on Mets Retro Uniform

Yesterday, the Mets announced the addition of a 60s-inspired, home retro jersey for 2010, which you can see here.

According to the outstanding UniWatch, Paul Lukas wonders why the Mets needed to issue a press release to announce the jersey, when they could easily have just written:

“You know that pinstriped uni we never wear?  Next year it’ll be beige instead of white.”

Lukas also takes issue with the team referring to the new uniform as ‘retro,’ because, unlike the original 60s version, this current model has the black drop shadow, and so, he says, “The Mets can’t even do retro accurately.”

…he is right… it is the essentially the same uniform they’ve been wearing, just in cream… as for the black or the shadow… i used to like it, now i don’t… the problem is, if you look at the list of top selling items from Mets.com, the black shirts and jerseys are always near the top…

…so, as much as i might dislike it, it probably doesn’t really matter what i think, considering i own one official Mets jersey, and i bought it in 1986…

The problem with the pinstripe or white jersey is that where are you going to wear it other than to the game. The black jersey is a bit more casual and is more accepted at social gatherings. To be honest, I think that’s the reason why they were created to begin with. And are we really criticizing the Mets because there is a drop shadow on the front and the name on the back? This is what it has come to? I really don’t care what the Mets wear as long as they win.

yeah, you’re right. you never see a pinstriped jersey anywhere. i mean, who would wear PINSTRIPES?! geez. it’s like…whoever had this idea, give it up. it’s SO 1912. i bet i don’t see one person wearing a pinstripe baseball jersey this season. not one. pinstripes. HA! fools.

in case you didn’t get the sarcasm memo, your argument for the black jersey could be the worst argument ever in the history of arguments.

What, that people like and buy them? Yeah, that’s a good reason to discontinue them. (THAT’S how you do sarcasm.)

Keep the black.

Ahh, 1986 a good vintage for the Mets! Oh how I miss those days!

I like the uniwatch columns alot, they are very entertaining, this whole press release thing is not hard to figure out if someone would just stop and think for 5 seconds before just immediatley bashing what the Mets do.

The Press release 1) announced the new uni, and 2) conveniently told us that it would go on sale Friday, just in time for the holiday shopping season. Thats why you issue a release and email your fans about it. Doesnt take a genius to figure this out.

The logic of the Mets fan:

1.) The Mets should never do anything to get any money out of me, for I am the loyal fan and should be given anything I want either cheaply/or free.

2.) The Mets should spend millions and millions of dollars signing top tier free agents AND their draft picks well above slot in order to make me, the fan who wants to spend no money, happy.

So in essence: “I, the fan, want the Mets to give me exactly what I want without expecting me to reimburse them for it, and then I want to go out with their own money, not mine, and spend it like crazy on new players.”

You want Matt Holliday or John Lackey here? Then go buy a freakin’ pinstriped, creme-colored, non-retro retro jersey.

LOL!!!

I own one jersey. A road gray. It’s definitely going to stay that way.

How is this Uniform even different? I see we dropped the ball again. It’s the same thing except the color is a little bit off. If you’re gonna do something new then make it really new. Why would Met fans want to spend more $ on something that is so close to what they probably already have.

They should have designed it to be more obviously creme colored rather than off-white which it looks like. They should have lost the pinstripes and changed the design. There’s no reason for me to buy this as a fan when I already have 5 Met jerseys and this one is almost exactly like the reg pinstripe jersey.
Dumb move!!!

If you want the new Mets retro jersey, just wear your current pinstripe jersey to a cigar bar for 1 month without washing it.

Gasface77 November 25, 2009 at 1:03 pm

Agree…this jersey does not look “retro” at all. The pinstripes look different, but the jersey still looks white. I would have liked to see something similar to the Cream “NY” old school jerseys they wore this past season.

I would have also liked to see a Mr. Met patch on the sleeve. That would have been a cool retro touch.

I like this uniform better than any ones they are currently wearing so it is an improvement, I just think the change could have been bigger and better.

Agreed, here’s a design I submitted to MetsBlog a while back that I think does a nice job:

Sometimes I just think that as an organization WE DO NOT GET IT in any way shape or form.

Cigar Bar – LOL

racemccloud November 25, 2009 at 2:26 pm

I do not get most of you. I really don’t. Everything this team does, their “fans” scream about how awful it is. Go root for somebody else. I see nothing wrong with these new jerseys. They’re pinstriped, which the “fans” want. They pay homage to old-school baseball, which the “fans” want. The Mets have given the “fans” what they want… and the “fans” still aren’t happy. Unbelievable.

Rorschach November 25, 2009 at 2:43 pm

They haven’t given me October baseball so I am not happy! …..but I get your point regarding the pinstriped jerseys.

racemccloud November 25, 2009 at 5:33 pm

Hey, scream all you want about the play on the field. But going nuts over stuff like this makes Mets fans look like obnoxious crybabies.

I like the dropshadows, I like the black, I didn’t like the white pinstripes but I like these.

Just because the vocal minority is in favor of something doesn’t mean the majority supports it, too.
