According to FoxSports.com, the Mets are close to re-signing RHP Elmer Dessens.
The 39–year-old Dessens had a 3.31 ERA in just 28 relief appearances for the Mets last season, during which left-handed batters hit .193 against him. He struck out 14 batters and walked 10, while allowing five home runs.
… the Mets need another ‘lefty specialist’ in addition to Pedro Feliciano… minor-leaguer Mike Antonini will be in the mix, i would think… bringing back dessens makes sense as well… it is omar’s way to ‘have numbers,’ as he says, when it comes to staging auditions for the back-end of the bullpen… the thing is, at no other point in his career was dessens so effective against left-handed hitters…
Mets 21–year-old OF Fernando Martinez returned from knee surgery last weekend, and is 1 for 12 with one strike out in three games for Escogido in the Dominican Winter League.
In a post to his blog for the Daily News, Adam Rubin quotes a friend in the Dominican Republic who believes the Mets told Escogido to delay Martinez’s return because they have been talking about trading him in the offseason.
… i don’t know how i feel about this… like i said last week, on one hand, because i have been following his career for so long now, whether he will or will not be a star, it seems i have a hard to giving up on him… not to mention, this year, in his fourth professional season, at age 20, he hit .290 with 26 extra base hits in 45 games for Triple-A Buffalo… which is impressive… at the same time, he struggled with the Mets, then had season-ending knee surgery, he’s seemingly always injured, and how long will the Mets wait for him to get it together, for fear that his stock keeps dropping…
Last week, in a poll to MetsBlog.com, 61 percent of more than 6,000 people who voted said the Mets should not trade Martinez this off season, while letting him continue to develop.
Andrew Vazzano of the The Ropolitans reveals answers from fans who answered the question, “What three former or current Mets would you invite to Thanksgiving dinner, and why?”
…for me, it would be Mike Piazza, Bobby Valentine and Keith Hernandez, because they seem like three people who would not only have interesting things to say about baseball, but all have a wide-range of interests and likely a lot of interesting things to say not about baseball…
SNY’s Ted Berg, of Ted Quarters, explains why he is thankful for Albert Pujols, Pears and the Spelling Bee Faint. Similarly, Zach Sanders of Fan Graphs lists eight Fantasy Baseball players he is thankful for.
Lastly, in a post to Loge 13, Kingman relays an e-mail from a Mets fan who is not thankful for his partial-ticket plan to Citi Field.
