According to FoxSports.com, the Mets are close to re-signing RHP Elmer Dessens.

The 39–year-old Dessens had a 3.31 ERA in just 28 relief appearances for the Mets last season, during which left-handed batters hit .193 against him.  He struck out 14 batters and walked 10, while allowing five home runs.

the Mets need another ‘lefty specialist’ in addition to Pedro Feliciano… minor-leaguer Mike Antonini will be in the mix, i would think… bringing back dessens makes sense as well… it is omar’s way to ‘have numbers,’ as he says, when it comes to staging auditions for the back-end of the bullpenthe thing is, at no other point in his career was dessens so effective against left-handed hitters…

Better not be a major league deal.

It looks like it will be one for the Dessens family

Knowing our creative GM it probably took a multi year deal to get it done!

Did Omar have Thanksgiving dinner with Elmer in an effort to get him to sign?

I really don’t think we need him. Go after Putz or Biemel. Although, I forgot who Dessens realy is so I don’t want to be saying bad things about him when he could of been one of the Mets best arms in the Bullpen last year.

No reason to be upset that we will have Dessens ready to be called up from AAA all season. Omar’s philosophy for the bullpen is quantity not quality since relievers are so inconsistent from year to year, and to hope we bring in one of our own minor leaguers per season.
Plus, September 2009 version of Dessens would have been better than almost anyone in the September 2008 version of the Mets pen.

If it’s not a minor league contract, I think there is some reason to be upset…

true but we didn’t even have him on a major league deal this past year, why would we offer a major league deal now?

That may be his philosophy, but that philosophy has not worked. (see 2007, 2008). So I’m not sure signing a guy like dessens makes sense. I mean if you have 10 bad relievers what does it matter who is coming out of the pen youre still going to get torched.
