Buzz: One Guy in DR thinks Mets might trade F-Mart

Mets 21–year-old OF Fernando Martinez returned from knee surgery last weekend, and is 1 for 12 with one strike out in three games for Escogido in the Dominican Winter League.

In a post to his blog for the Daily News, Adam Rubin quotes a friend in the Dominican Republic who believes the Mets told Escogido to delay Martinez’s return because they have been talking about trading him in the offseason.

… i don’t know how i feel about this… like i said last week, on one hand, because i have been following his career for so long now, whether he will or will not be a star, it seems i have a hard to giving up on him… not to mention, this year, in his fourth professional season, at age 20, he hit .290 with 26 extra base hits in 45 games for Triple-A Buffalo… which is impressive… at the same time, he struggled with the Mets, then had season-ending knee surgery, he’s seemingly always injured, and how long will the Mets wait for him to get it together, for fear that his stock keeps dropping…

Last week, in a poll to MetsBlog.com, 61 percent of more than 6,000 people who voted said the Mets should not trade Martinez this off season, while letting him continue to develop.

With Martinez it is just one of those things where you just don’t if he is a sure thing or not. If they decide to trade him then do it and do it this offseason when it seems like teams are looking to make more trades then spend on FA’s. But if the Mets decide to keep him then they should not rush him. He showed he was over matched at the plate this year before he got hurt. Once again you can’t forget he is only 20 so let’s give the kid a little more time to prove himself like we all want him to do.

It depends who they trade him for and if they get Holliday in the offseason. An outfield of Holliday-Beltran-Francoeur is pretty solid and the corner positions will be around for awhile (CF depends upon the state of Beltran’s knees).

If they do that and then package F-Mart to land someone like Fielder for 1B, then adios muchacho.

I think it would take Davis to get AGon or Fielder. I see FMart going more in a salary dump scenario like Cabrera; not saying any of these are real options.

Iwould try for Cabrera if he is available this winter. He is a tremendous offensive guy that this line up needs. He is better offensively than Holliday. But were talking first baseman and I jsut don’t think AGon is as available as Cabrera might be.

I agree. AGon will cost a ton and even if we had the pieces it would mortgage the future. Cabrera is only 27 and can flat out dominate an offence. With him you can get by with less in other positions. Look at the Cards with Puljols. Granted Cabrera isn’t Puljols but with Beltran, Wright, and Reyes and then Cabrera you can get by with Castillo and Pagan holding the fort until Davis is ready. You need more solid pitching though. But Cabrera can flat out bring it

If we got Cabrera, it would certainly be as the long-term first baseman and the trade would have to include Davis. There would be no point in holding onto him anyway since Cabrera can only play firstbase and is signed for the next six years. I would not be opposed to picking him up because his bat is amazing, although I would be concerned about his weight and attitude.
Obviously our pitching would need to improve, but Cabrera alone could have added 4-5 wins to our team last year, so I kind of like the idea.

if Detroit is desperate to move big salaries and there are few buyers the Davis may not necessarily be included. The Yanks have Tex, the Sox may not have room due to a Bay / Holliday + Halliday signings and trades, the Angels have Morales and don’t seem to want to pull the trigger, the Phila have Howard. That leaves the Dodgers, the Giants, and the Mets. So a deal like Santana may not be entirely out of the picture.

If Davis is kept he can be moved for someone else, or moved to the OF.

I don’t see why you exclude the Sox from interested teams when they were trying their hardest to get A-Gon until a few days ago. They moved to Halladay when San Diego said they weren’t giving up A-Gon, but if Cabrera became available I imagine they would jump at the opportunity for a young 1B who can replace Ortiz as DH soon.
The reason Davis would have to be included is because we don’t have much else to give up, he plays the position of the player we are obtaining, and because the Tigers aren’t trying hard to get rid of him, they are just listening to offers on all players since they are trying to move some money. If we wanted to get him we would have to give up a good amount.

you make a good point about the Sox.

The only person I would trade FM for… Well for any of these guys.. ANYONE has to be considered.. Halladay and AGon, In truth, I don’t think we have the pieces to make any big trade.

It makes absolutely no sense to trade him when his stock is so low. The only way we can get proper value for him now is to continue to let him develop and one day become a star for us, which is something I don’t think many people question will happen.

georgetseaver November 26, 2009 at 1:39 pm

Buy low, sell high? I’m not sure if most Mets fans know about this concept. On the other hand, I’m not so sure that our GM knows about it either.

brye65 November 26, 2009 at 1:49 pm

It makes alot of sense. Now is the time to move him while he still has value. The longer we keep him value drops. There is no telling if he’s gonna amount. F- Mart should of been moved already. If we can get a Halliday or a Gonzalez ? I wouldn’t have second thoughts moving him in a deal.

astromets November 26, 2009 at 5:32 pm

The thing is, we cannot get an Adrian Gonzalez, and it is unlikely we could get Roy Halladay (though he is a slight possibility). Any time you can get a sure thing like that I am in favor of giving up the prospects, but the thing is teams don’t think enough of our prospects to get any sure thing. So trade him for a nobody and see him be a star for other teams, or say that no matter whether or not he becomes a star he is ours. Why trade him now if everytime he has been healthy in the minors he has played above average and was always way under aged? No one is a sure thing, but, barring injuries, F-Mart is pretty close to being a sure MLB player some day, even if not as a star.

Martinez value is no where near its possible best return at this point. Unless other teams GMs are more unrealistically optimistic than the average Met fan, you need to keep him at this point. His value will be greatest when he proves he is actually a potential major league player again.

metskat November 27, 2009 at 10:18 am

…..if halliday is willing to take fewer years then we need to try and get him…maybe santana will go further into games when he sees doc pitching complete games, etc,,,it could have a real effect…less reliance on the bullpen, etc….
