.....if halliday is willing to take fewer years then we need to try and get him...maybe santana will go further into games when he sees doc pitching complete games, etc,,,it could have a real effect...less reliance on the bullpen, etc....

Martinez value is no where near its possible best return at this point. Unless other teams GMs are more unrealistically optimistic than the average Met fan, you need to keep him at this point. His value will be greatest when he proves he is actually a potential major league player again.

The thing is, we cannot get an Adrian Gonzalez, and it is unlikely we could get Roy Halladay (though he is a slight possibility). Any time you can get a sure thing like that I am in favor of giving up the prospects, but the thing is teams don't think enough of our prospects to get any sure thing. So trade him for a nobody and see him be a star for other teams, or say that no matter whether or not he becomes a star he is ours. Why trade him now if everytime he has been healthy in the minors he has played above average and was always way under aged? No one is a sure thing, but, barring injuries, F-Mart is pretty close to being a sure MLB player some day, even if not as a star.

I don't see why you exclude the Sox from interested teams when they were trying their hardest to get A-Gon until a few days ago. They moved to Halladay when San Diego said they weren't giving up A-Gon, but if Cabrera became available I imagine they would jump at the opportunity for a young 1B who can replace Ortiz as DH soon.
The reason Davis would have to be included is because we don't have much else to give up, he plays the position of the player we are obtaining, and because the Tigers aren't trying hard to get rid of him, they are just listening to offers on all players since they are trying to move some money. If we wanted to get him we would have to give up a good amount.

It makes alot of sense. Now is the time to move him while he still has value. The longer we keep him value drops. There is no telling if he's gonna amount. F- Mart should of been moved already. If we can get a Halliday or a Gonzalez ? I wouldn't have second thoughts moving him in a deal.

Buy low, sell high? I'm not sure if most Mets fans know about this concept. On the other hand, I'm not so sure that our GM knows about it either.

if Detroit is desperate to move big salaries and there are few buyers the Davis may not necessarily be included. The Yanks have Tex, the Sox may not have room due to a Bay / Holliday + Halliday signings and trades, the Angels have Morales and don't seem to want to pull the trigger, the Phila have Howard. That leaves the Dodgers, the Giants, and the Mets. So a deal like Santana may not be entirely out of the picture.

If Davis is kept he can be moved for someone else, or moved to the OF.

If we got Cabrera, it would certainly be as the long-term first baseman and the trade would have to include Davis. There would be no point in holding onto him anyway since Cabrera can only play firstbase and is signed for the next six years. I would not be opposed to picking him up because his bat is amazing, although I would be concerned about his weight and attitude.
Obviously our pitching would need to improve, but Cabrera alone could have added 4-5 wins to our team last year, so I kind of like the idea.

It makes absolutely no sense to trade him when his stock is so low. The only way we can get proper value for him now is to continue to let him develop and one day become a star for us, which is something I don't think many people question will happen.
