News: Mets and Alex Cora agree to Deal
The Mets have announced the signing of Alex Cora to a one-year contract for the 2010 season, with a vesting, club option for 2011.
In a team press release, Cora is quoted as saying:
“I am excited about coming back. We have a lot to prove as a team after what happened last year. As for me personally, there is unfinished business. I was hurt a great deal of the time and I really wasn’t able to perform like I know I can. I’m healthy now and I can’t wait to get to spring training. We all have something to prove.”
In a post to Twitter, SI.com’s Jon Heyman wrote, “Cora’s financial breakdown: 50 grand for ballplaying, $1.95 mil for being a helluva nice guy.”
…hilarious, jon… well played…

The Mets are close to re-signing Alex Cora to a one-year deal, according to Rob Bradford of WEEI in Boston.
Bradford believes the deal would guarantee Cora the same $2 million he made last season, with an option for 2011.
…this sounds about right…sure, he didn’t have a sensational season… but, i believe he is the type of player who fans are unable to accurately judge, because his true value may be in the clubhouse, and on the bench, not on the field… so, like i said last month, i can handle him being re-signed… so long as he is the only player like this on the roster, because i believe every team needs at least one ‘Uncle Cliff,’ like Cliff Floyd, who is like a player-coach… but that’s it, just one, omar… just one…
The 34–year-old Cora had season-ending surgery in August on the torn ligaments in both of his thumbs.
He hit .417 in 16 plate appearances as a pinch hitter this season, while batting .243 in the 67 games that he started.
