Buzz: on Rockies Outfielders, & Bay, Sox and Holliday

The Rockies plan to keep OF Ryan Spilborghs, according to FoxSports.com, “unless they receive a substantial offer.”

the thing is, how many of these outfielders do the Rockies intend on having next season… it would seem to me, eventually, they’ll need to remove one of Dexter Fowler, Carlos Gonzalez, Matt Murton or Brad Hawpe, or spilborghs, from the roster, and most likely in a deal for a pitcher… yet, they keep signaling through reports that they have no intention of making any sort of change…

…i hope the Mets keep an eye on Colorado, since one of these guys could also easily end up non tendered and on the open market towards the end of December…

Speaking of outfielders…

According to the samr report, one rival executive believes the Red Sox actually prefer free-agent OF Matt Holliday, even though they continue to negotiate with free-agent OF Jason Bay.

This makes sense. I was surprised that the Sox were not more interested in Holliday. My guess would be is that they feel they could get Bay for cheaper.

If I were the Sox I would go after Holliday.

cheaper and they lose no compensation for retaining Bay. The Red Sox value that sort of thing.

while I disagree on some of Rosenthal’s stuff (like the Yankees being biggest competition for Holliday, or the Mets not likely to sign Bay), he does make the interesting note that if they sign Holliday and offer arbitration to Bay- and Bay signs with a team in the top 15 – they actually get 2 picks and only give up 1, and the 1st round pick they get is quite likely to higher than the one they lose

In the end, they will still resign Bay, this is nothing more than the Redsox trying to drive the price down on Bay. It makes little sense for them to spend more for Holiday when he really trully isn’t that big an upgrade over Bay and they already know how Bay handles Boston, in the field, at the plate, and in the clubhouse.
