while I disagree on some of Rosenthal's stuff (like the Yankees being biggest competition for Holliday, or the Mets not likely to sign Bay), he does make the interesting note that if they sign Holliday and offer arbitration to Bay- and Bay signs with a team in the top 15 - they actually get 2 picks and only give up 1, and the 1st round pick they get is quite likely to higher than the one they lose

cheaper and they lose no compensation for retaining Bay. The Red Sox value that sort of thing.

In the end, they will still resign Bay, this is nothing more than the Redsox trying to drive the price down on Bay. It makes little sense for them to spend more for Holiday when he really trully isn't that big an upgrade over Bay and they already know how Bay handles Boston, in the field, at the plate, and in the clubhouse.

According to the samr report, one rival executive believes the Red Sox actually prefer free-agent OF Matt Holliday, even though they continue to negotiate with free-agent OF Jason Bay.

This makes sense. I was surprised that the Sox were not more interested in Holliday. My guess would be is that they feel they could get Bay for cheaper.

If I were the Sox I would go after Holliday.
