Coste: I will Always Consider Myself a Phillie

By Matthew Cerrone on Dec 01, 2009, 10:45 am

Last night, the Forum of Fargo-Moorhead said the Mets signed free-agent C Chris Coste.

In an interview with CSN in Philadelphia, Coste said of signing with the Mets:

“It’s the last team I ever saw myself playing for.  I knew I was going to accept it, but had to think about it for a few days… It wasn’t my choice to leave Philly… I never wanted to leave Philadelphia, I will always consider myself a Phillie.”

…why, why would someone do this to themselves…

…just like it’s not smart to talk endlessly about your ex-girlfriend while on a date with a new girl, this too is a huge, huge mistake…

…nice job, chris… welcome to new york

Coste hit .224 in 88 games with the Phillies and Astros last season, during which he played 15 games at first base.

Speaking of Coste, Zach Sanders of Fan Graphs takes a statistical-look at Coste and Alex Cora, who the Mets also signed yesterday to a one-year, $2 million deal.

He will never last here in New York if he keeps that mindset. I am fine with giving him a chance to audition for the spot on 25 man roster, it gives the Mets more options but i don’t think he has what it takes to make a successful transition. If he proves me wrong, so be it.

Talk about opening mouth inserting BOTH FEET! That will get him a spot in AAA OR TRADED in a hurry!

Well of course he’s going to say that during an interview with a Philadelphia station. Whatever. It is what it is. He’s probably going to end up a AAA catcher who will be called up occassionally during the season.

C’mon, players dodge questions all the time, he didn’t have to answer this question the way he did. Was it even a question, or did he just come out and say this?
Even if he was directly asked, “Do you consider yourself a phillie” He could’ve answered “my time is philadelphia was special, but basball is a business.” That’s all he had to say, and it wouldn’t sound as awful as it did.
I don’t foresee a political career for Coste.

I will boo him from my living room every time he gets up to bat,
    just because I want to.

Whatever – David Cone said he’d always consider himself a Met the day he signed his deal with the Yankees…didn’t stop him from winning 4 rings in the Bronx.

Not saying Chris Coste is David Cone, but who cares? They gave gim his shot after he spent over 10 years in the minors. I am sure I’d feel a bond with them too.

God forbid he does something wrong in a game against the Phillies…metsblog might collectively explode.

i thought we were looking to upgrade at catcher.

i mean omir santos is far better than chris coste.

    what happened to benji molina?

if this is true than don’t expect this team to go out and make any big moves, because if you can’t afford benji molina than you are pretty pathetic.

Just commented this on AA, but what’s the big deal? Both Piazza and Pedro said the same thing in press conferences for their new team after leaving the Mets. Aaron Heilman said it too for Pete’s sake. Whys are athletes expected ot hide their emotional attachment to a team that gave them the must joy up until the day they sign with a new team? Isn’t that the classy thing to do?

Tom Seaver cried his heart out about always being a Met two weeks after he became a Red on national TV with Dick Cavett, or was it that other old TV guy?

To paraphrase Lloyd Bentsen, I saw Tom Seaver play, and Chris Coste is no Tom Seaver.

Certain players who have been around enough have earned the right to say something like this.

Coste should have kept his mouth shut, regardless of who he’s talking to. Anyone with half a brain should know these days anything you say will be heard by all. Does he have that little respect for the team that is (now) paying him?

I agree it is a stupid thing to say, especially considering the fact that he is now a member of a team that has been a “rival”, and I use that term loosely these days. I know the rivalry has lost its flair the last few years, but do you really want to come into NY at anytime during the season and deal with the wrath of the angry Met fans? I have no problem with a guy feeling emotionally attached with a team, especially in Coste’s case where he is attached to the Phillies because after a career with them in the minors, they gave him a chance in the majors, but those emotional comments should be reserved for either after you retire or only if you are not playing for a division rival.

Well Pedro played for the Mets all of two seasons, I dont remember any outraged Phillie bloggers after his press conference. Much crying about nothing in my opinion.
