Late-Day Buzz: on Pudge, Dye, Lowry and Relievers

By Matthew Cerrone on Dec 02, 2009, 3:52 pm

Jon Heyman of SI.com believes the Mets, Giants and Royals all have interest in free-agent C Ivan Rodriguez.

The Red Sox, Cardinals and Giants are among teams who have interest in free-agent OF Jermaine Dye, reports the Chicago Sun-Times.

According to ESPN.com, the Dodgers, Padres, A’s, Mariners and Reds are interested in free-agent LHP Noah Lowry, who has not pitched in the big leagues since 2007, when he was 14–8 with a 3.92 ERA.

…he is the definition of a high-risk, high-reward signing… he accused the Giants of misdiagnosing a forearm injury, then he had surgery to remove a rib… and so, basically, he’s had some major medical issues, to say the least… it’s too bad, because, when healthy, he has outstanding control, with a big, looping curve ball and he knows how to command an inning

The Braves are looking for more help in the bullpen, according to David O’Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, and might have interest in free agents Octavio Dotel and Fernando Rodney.

Speaking of which, there is a good chance the Marlins trade two of Renyel Pinto, Matt Lindstrom and Leo Nunez, writes Joe Frisaro of MLB.com.

I know Pudge is well past his prime at this point, but to me, he is the perfect option for the Mets. He will be inexpensive, he is a proven team leader and winner and most importantly, he will be able to tutor our young catcher in waiting Thole throughout Spring Training.

If Thole is tearing it up in the minors to start the season, he could come up and split time with Pudge and learn at the same time. It is certainly something to consider….I am totally against signing Molina to a 2 year contract.

I agree completely. He is nowhere near where he once was but is still solid and as good as the other options. Plus he has shown the ability to handle pitchers well. A 75/25 platoon this year with Santos, etc would be fine.

I wouldnt Say pudge is perfect but I agree with what your saying

I wouldnt mind signing pudge…like you said he could help tutor thole which I think is the best thing he brings to the table

It would be great for thole…as for helping the Mets win pudge would be ok at best but it is something to look into

He is definitely not perfect. But neither are any of the other choices unless the Twins decide to gift wrap Mauer to the Mets as a holiday present. It is kind of like picking the one that leaves the least amount of a bad taste in your mouth.

Exactly right. However, Pudge might be perfect in that he is the ideal candidate to tutor Thole. In fact, I can’t imagine a better guy to tutor an up-and-coming catcher.

Yeah i agree. He will come inexpensive, he will be of a helpful tutor to Josh Thole who is learning, and is a proven team leader. Very well put.

If the Mets were to go for Bengie Molina, even though he wasn’t offered arbitration, he will ask for alittle more then what i think the Mets are willing to pay. So Ivan Rodriguez would be a perfect choice for the Mets.

I bet Pudge accepts arbitration to be honest with you. There are too many catchers out there for him to get much more than arbitration will get him.

Yea it all sounds good…I like pudge he can be a good leader for the Mets and a great tutor for thole in spring

And he would come cheaper than any other option….I think pudge would be a good fit

I’m beginning to think Heyman looks at a free agent, see what position he plays, and then looks and sees what teams need said position. He then reports and lists those teams as having interest in a particular player. Well yes, we have interest in a catcher, so naturally lets tie every catcher on the market to the Mets. Very investigative.

Well that’s Heyman for you, we come to expect as much from him! lol Look at it this way, atleast doing it that way he might be right 1/3 of the time instead of wrong all the time!

Don’t forget the work he does as a mouthpiece for Boras. I swear he has to be on the payroll or something/

Sign Lowry, Sheets & Duchsherer and hope that they will all be ready sometime in 2010. When on, they would present us with a very formidable staff

A player name Collapso sounds about right to play on the Mets.

I agree with the thought of Pudge playing for the Mets. He is a good person to have for the Mets catching issue at a cheaper price than Benji. Also another player I would sign a one year deal to would be Rodney as the Mets set up guy. He throws hard and has experience.

Yup. One year on both Pudge and Rodney. The mets are going to have to give Holliday atleast a 100MM so they need a low cost and short term deals to fill the teams other holes.

Pudge WOULD be a good fit. He’ll only hit 260-ish but I think it’s more about what Pudge could do for Thole. Pudge has more balls behind the plate than Spaldeen (not Spalding) has in a bodega window; more tricks behind the plate than a 3rd Ave Sunset Park “lady of the night” (don’t want to get banned) has tricks; and has more passion about the game than FOX News Chanel bends the truth. If he comes on the cheap at low years…sign the guy!
