    Any speculation?

    Steroids? Comebacks? Salary Cap? Stike?

he replied to my Tweet mentioning a salary cap (and blood testing) and basically berated me.

Hm. Very interesting. I think one of those could be what hot stove chef said; a salary cap. At least some form of it, anyway.

    The second? No idea.

It can’t possibly be a salary cap because that can’t be unilaterally decided by the owners. It would have to be a part of the collective bargaining agreement and if the union and MLB had opened up the CBA for renegotiation there is no way on God’s green earth that would have been kept secret from the media.

They would have to open the CBA to do a salary cap. No way the players association would allow that without it costing the owners significant money and concessions! But I wouldn’t be supprised to see it on the 2012 docket. I doubt they’ll get one, but I bet it’s discussed.

I did hear that there will be changes to the drug policy, what those changes might be I dunno.

      Dec 04, 2009, 7:17 pm at 7:17 pm #

The have been rumblings of a salary minimum… to prevent teams receiving revenue sharing from putting it in their pocket rather than investing it in the team…

I don’t think that would require opening the CBA

      • Mets5rocks
        Dec 04, 2009, 7:22 pm at 7:22 pm #

Probably not, the players association would let that slide as it could only benefit the players, but then again they might not, because there are some in the union who believe that a salary floor is the first step towards a salary cap at that certainly would be something they would be against. Sooner or later it’s going to happen , but the union will fight a salary cap as long as possible.

    It could be many things.

    1) A drug policy
    2) I think this is it. They will expand the Division Series to 7 games instead of 5.
    3) A team is moving
    4) The YAnks will trade for Doc.

But seriously, I think it is #2 but don’t know the second one.

Maybe there cutting down the season to 162 to a smaller #. Hope not. Maybe the idea is playing in Decmber. Or playing the Marlins in Puerto Rico. I have to be right with my suggestions.

Maybe they might even extend the season. Or teams start off with a 40 man roster. I got it. INSTANT REPLAY. They will expand it. Well here are ALL my thoughts on it

      1) Extend the season
      2) Shorten the season
      3) Teams start off with a 40 man roster
      4) Instant Replay will expand
      5) Baseball in december
      6) Marlins home games are in Puerto Rico
      7) A drug policy
      8) Something about the draft
      9) There will be a minor league WS.
      10) Expand the Divison Series to 7 games.
      11) A team is moving
      12) Something about the HOF

Hate to brag but I came up with good suggestions. I should win something If I get the 2.

Yeah when the pitchers are on one side and they face the hitters.

              Johan
              Doc
              CC
              Timmy
              Beckett

              FACE

              Ramirez
              Wright
              Beltran
              Ichiro
              Mauer
              Pujols
              Utley

LOL, Carroll sure knows how to tease and raise a storm of interest. Just hope the real news lives up to the hype.

I doubt it’s a salary cap, though god knows they need one. That would have to be collectively bargained for, and so nothing could happen without union agreement and action.

Got to be something like a team moving as someone said, or some real big name caught juicing, or retiring? Or maybe it’s a huge mega trade that’s totally unexpected.

I think you already guessed it above. And its something that they had been discussing on the MLB channel.

The one you guessed is increasing the initial series from a best of 5 to a best of 7. I think that makes a lot of sense.

The second is related to the first. If you add more games in the playoffs, you need to reduce the number of games in the regular season. Will they reduce from 162 to 160, or will they reduce all the way back to 154? I have always thought the season was too long.

In any case, I think these are the two BIG News items.

    • MetsFan06
      Dec 04, 2009, 8:02 pm at 8:02 pm #

I hope they don’t make it shorter. My life revolves around baseball. I play it. Watch it. I love baseball.

    • KickedintheMetsiclesAgain
      Dec 04, 2009, 8:02 pm at 8:02 pm #

BTW, another interesting spin, which I believe I heard either on SNY or MLB channel, was to add another wild card team.

Have to the two wild card teams play each other in a five game playin. The three division winners would all get to rest, giving them the advantage they deserve as a divisiion winner.

The advantage to the above is that it would again keep more teams in the hunt during the regular season and make it more exciting for the fans.

It would require the wild cards teams to play an extra round of playoffs, which would prevent them from setting their rotations.

This again would go further into having ot reduce the number of regular season games as mentioned above.

I like it so the current Mets have a better chance but it seems too confusing. The guy that made the rumo has problems that he can’t tell us right now. I think it is good that Matt posted this but it would be awesome it was a surprise. I’m a teen so it would be awesome coming home from school hearing that team moved. If a team moved, it would be an NL team b/c we have 16 teams and the AL has 14.

        • Mingo
          Dec 04, 2009, 8:28 pm at 8:28 pm #

It can’t be that. This would mean 15 teams in each league and that would require there having to be one team off every day.

Alright, so after taking into account all the comments thus far, I’m pretty lost.

The salary cap, as pointed out, must be negotiated with the PA. So that’s out.

A team moving or being sold would probably have MANY news stories behind it. Although, the whole Madoff thing COULD be a precursor. Just saying….

A change to a 5 game DLCS to 7 games actually would really annoy me. Actually, I take that back. I think what annoys me is how far in the year to playoffs go. The WS should absolutely be wrapped up in October, IMO.

I really don’t know what these announcements could be. I’m pretty sure they will end up be underwhelming, though.

I would be cool with the increase in the Division Series if the season was shortened by a few games.

If it was a team moving there would be news about it already. Also, changing the playoff format would not make too much sense other than to shorten it.
Based upon Selig’s history I would think that it could have something to do with interleague play or possibly international play.
I gotta think that sale of the Cubs could be one of the stories.

    • eDaPS
      Dec 04, 2009, 8:12 pm at 8:12 pm #

Sale of the Cubs is actually a good point.

But for inter-league play? Hopefully it’s eliminated. I can appreciate that it, supposedly (I don’t have the facts), increased viewers and attendance. However, I feel that it is ultimately bad for baseball. And this is coming from a 25 year old who started watching and cheering for the Mets in about 96-97. The beginning of the changes Selig made. Eventual elimination of inter-league play is my hope.

Selig stepping down isn’t it. He already announced his retirement date.

I don’t think that would ever happen. They’d have to push the walls back in each stadium 100 feet, lol.

      • MetsFan06
        Dec 04, 2009, 8:28 pm at 8:28 pm #

IMO, much less than 100 feet. I am 16 years old and I hit a ball 280 feet with a wooden bat. That’s pretty good right so lets say I used an aluminum bat. I doubt I can hit a ball 380 feet with an aluminum bat. I am very tall and all muscle. I am mostly a power hitter with extreme spped. I wish I could be in the MLB and I play baseball and track in school but it will never happen. Now that you think about, there will be a lot more deaths in baseball and injuries in baseball. If an aluminum bat breaks it can get scary. My aluminum bat idea was very dumb.

One of the things that I think they are going to do is make less days off during the playoffs. There are too many days between games and series which is one of the biggest reasons that the season goes into Nov. and they hate that the season last that long because of the cold weather.

    collusion related?

  28. metsfan1
    Dec 04, 2009, 10:03 pm at 10:03 pm #

My first thought was to say that either the Steinbrenner’s or Mark Cuban was buying the Mets. Hey, we can all dream.

In reality though, I seriously doubt there is a salary cap coming. As pointed out the players would have to approve and the owners can’t even agree on it. That is out.

A drug policy change? Doubtful. The MLBPA just got a new leader and he is not going to give away players’ rights in his first move. That’s out.

A team moving? Who? Florida and TB are getting new stadiums. KC just renovated theirs. Pittsburgh has the best stadium. Honestly if a team were moving I would think it would be Toronto. The Skydome isn’t anything great and they can’t compete in the AL East anyway. I doubt that is happening.

So it has to come down to rules or competition. There has been a lot of talk about changing the playoff format. Selig has already said he would look into shortening the playoffs by eliminating off days. Extending the first round to 7 days does that as well as potentially increases revenue. MLB likes increasing revenue. Secondly, maybe they add a wild card and give the best team in each league a bye. Just a thought. There is no way they will shorten the season because for the bottom 75% of the league, they need as many home dates as possible.

I think what we might see is inter league play discontinued. Maybe they keep it to one series like Yankees-Mets, the 2 Chicago teams etc.. and setup a rivalry weekend but IMO, its time has come and gone. I never liked it. Go back to tradition where the 2 leagues never face each other and there is true debate among fans about who maybe better.

If it isn’t inter league rule changes then I believe the stupid All-Star winner gets home field will go away. Dumb rule.

Finally it could be the expansion of instant replay, especially when you consider how poorly the umps were in the playoffs. But if memory serves me correctly, that was shot down at the recent owners meetings.

Hey, If you don’t see this I’ll post it somewhere else. Iam a 16 years old and in high school. I started playing in 8th grade. You may think this is weird but I kept track of how fast I throw and how far I hit. So I stunk when I was 11 so I’ll started when I was 12.
      12: 240 foot hr/ 64 mph
      13: 255 foot hr/ 67 mph
      14: 260 foot hr/ 73 mph
      15: 274 foot hr/ 76 mph?
      16: 180 foot-/ 79 mph-

When I was 15 I smundged the paper. You guys are probably wondering how I came up with these #’s. I went tomy high school field at asked the coach to bring cones and a speedometer. There were about 20 cones all over the outfield and they all had a # of feet in cardboard on them. Many people say the Speedometer are off so I’m gonna agree with them because I don’t understand sometimes how it gets the pitch. I pitched from a high school mound. I am not a pitcher. I can only throw a fastball and a wicked slider that breaks about 2 feet. I play 3rd base and all of the outfield. I can play first but I never tried.
