Buzz: Mets and Brewers talk about Maine for Hart

by Matthew Cerrone on December 8th, 2009 at 8:54 am

Thumb_HartRoyalBlueShirtAdam Rubin of the Daily News believes talks between the Mets and Brewers are on the backburner as Milwaukee concentrates on free-agent pitching.

According to Rubin, “Brewers pitching coach Rick Peterson likes John Maine, but the Mets can’t afford to part with a starting pitcher.”

To read more about the team’s efforts to work with the Cubs on trading Luis Castillo, as well as David Wright’s and Daniel Murphy’s one-week stint at Howard Johnson’s, go to Rubin’s report, here.

Joel Sherman of the New York Post believes the Mets and Brewers have discussed a deal that would send RHP John Maine to Milwaukee in exchange for OF Corey Hart.

damn, because, earlier this week, i heard the Mets and Brewers were talking about an outfielder, and, dummy me, i thought it might be about Ryan Braun… i should have known better

actually don’t the Mets already have hart in right field, or is that Jeff Francoeur

yes, hart has some power, and he hits left-handed pitching very, very well, but he strikes out a lot and does not hit well with runners on base… he’s definitely a starting right fielder, and he is capable of playing first base

The 27–year-old Hart hit .260 last season, with 12 HR, 24 doubles, a .335 OBP and 48 RBI, while missing roughly six weeks with an appendectomy.

He hit .268 with 20 home runs in 2008; and he’s OPS has declined each of the last three seasons.

Hart and Maine are each eligible for arbitration each of the next two seasons, after which both players can become free agents for the first time in their careers.

…i am not yet ready to give up on maine, who seemed healthy for the first time in a long while at the end of last season… that said, i know the Mets need to start making changes, and switching up the roster, and what team knows maine’s shoulder better than the Mets…
