Buzz: The Pitcher’s Market… and Vanilla Pitchers
…from what i can gather, the Mets are only interested in giving John Lackey a three of four-year deal…
Last week, Tim Brown of Yahoo! Sports said a team negotiating with Lackey believes he is seeking a deal worth more than the $82.5 million, five-year deal A.J. Burnett signed last off season with the Yankees.
…by the way, if you’re a Mets fan who wants lackey, hope the Yankees re-sign Andy Pettitte… that said, i’m starting to get the feeling lackey will either end up back with the Angels, in Seattle, or with some other team than trains in Arizona and is out west some place… the only way it seems he ends up in the Northeast is if Toronto keeps Roy Halladay, and the Yankees and Red Sox start a bidding war… or, if the Mets decide to go bonkers and do a six-year, $100 million offer, which i don’t see them doing…
As such, according to Joel Sherman of the New York Post, “The Mets have talked more about starting pitchers in their internal sessions at the Winter Meetings than any of their other needs.”
Sherman believes the Mets are leaning toward adding a ‘vanilla starter,’ i.e., a known No. 3-4 pitcher who can throw at least 175 innings at around ‘league average production,’ such as free agents Doug Davis, Jon Garland and Jason Marquis.
…i’m starting to think it be most smart to sign two of these guys, i.e., a guy like garland to a one-year deal, as well as someone more risky, like free-agent RHP Joel Pineiro, while, fine, whatever, signing Bengie Molina and trading for a left fielder… i still want Matt Holliday, but, if the team is this focused on pitching, i am not sure just signing a guy like garland will be enough, when teamed up with John Maine, Johan Santana, Mike Pelfrey and Oliver Perez… maybe, but it still is missing some sort of punch…
Yesterday, in an Q&A with the Daily Stache, Adam Rubin of the Daily News said Pineiro is the most likeliest pitcher to sign with the Mets. However, according to Jon Heyman of SI.com, the Mets learned last night that Pineiro is seeking a four-year deal.
…by the way, that Edy’s Slow Churn Vanilla Bean is outstanding…
