News: Ivan Rodriguez signs 2-yr Deal with Nationals

by Matthew Cerrone on December 8th, 2009 at 3:41 am

The Nationals have signed free-agent C Ivan Rodriguez to a two-year, $6 million deal contract, according to Tim Brown of Yahoo! Sports.

well, this does not bode well for the Mets, who do not want to give a two-year deal to free-agent C Benjie Molinasuddenly, and hat’s off to his agent, Scott Boras, but pudge getting two years and $3 million per season, makes Benjie Molina getting a two-year, $12 million deal seem like a realistic request

Rodriguez hit .251 with a .280 OBP, eight HR, 15 doubles and 34 RBI in 93 games for the Astros last season.

…i am actually surprised the Mets didn’t go for pudge, instead of molina… but, from what i can gather, again, the focus seems to be on how the catching duo will work with the pitching staff, and molina has a much, much better reputation in this department especially when it comes to younger pitchers, like Mike Pelfrey, John Maine, Oliver Perez and Jon Niese

DoumitryanautoSpeaking of catchers…

The Pirates have been talking to teams interested in trading for C Ryan Doumit, as well as closer Matt Capps, report Dejan Kovacevic of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

According to Kovacevic, the Rangers and Mariners are interested in Doumit.

Last night, John Paul Morosi of FoxSports.com said four teams are in on Doumit.

… i believe the Mets have considered him, but i am not sure they’re one of the four teams… if i had to guess, i’d say the Brewers, Blue Jays, Rangers and Giants might fit the mold

Doumit hit .318 with 15 HR in 116 games during 2008, but hit just .250 in half as many games in 2009 as he fractured his wrist mid-way through the season.

He has played mostly catcher during his five-year career, but has also spent time at first base and in right field.
