News: Phillies sign Ross Gload for their Bench

By Matthew Cerrone on Dec 08, 2009, 11:58 pm

The Phillies have signed Ross Gload to a two-year contract, according to MLB.com.

The 33–year-old Gload hit .261 last season for the Marlins, but had a .318 average as a pinch hitter, while batting .271 against right-handed pitching.

Gload has played first base and all three outfield positions during his career.

Earlier tonight, FoxSports.com said Gload deciding between the Phillies, Braves and Marlins.

… gload did have a good average from the bench, against righties, and he does play first, so i would have thought the Mets might have been involved…

…but, i can’t see them giving out a two-year deal to a bench player…

I think if Gload hit right-handed the Mets would have been in on him. He would have made a smart compliment to Murphy.

If this guy was a platoon alternative for Murphy perhaps Omar should look at possible 1Bmen

Didn’t they just sign Cora to a 2 year deal or a 1 year deal with an 2nd year option? He’s not a bench player?

You mean like the 2 year deals they gave to Marlon Anderson, Ramon Castro, Julio Franco, or Alex Cora?
