Buzz: Ben Sheets will Throw, will Sign in January

By Matthew Cerrone on Dec 09, 2009, 9:11 pm

The Journal-Sentinel says free-agent RHP Ben Sheets is looking to earn $12 million.

ESPN’s Peter Gammons said on air that Sheets is throwing from flat ground, as he continues to his rehab after having major elbow surgery.

…from what i can gather, his agent has been telling any one who will listen that sheets’s elbow will be 100 percent ready for spring training

According to Gammons, Sheets is likely to sign a deal in January, after he auditions for teams in a few weeks.

That said, Gammons says teams have just as many questions about Sheets’s back as they do about his surgically-repaired elbow.

Sheets missed all of last season recovering from surgery, but was 13-9 with a 3.09 ERA in 198 innings in 2008, helping the Brewers advance to the post season.

Similarly, FoxSports.com’s Ken Rosenthal said on the MLB Network that free-agent RHP Mark Mulder will likely end up signing with the Brewers, reuniting him with Rick Peterson, his pitching for the A’s.

Mulder has not pitched a full season in the Major Leagues since 2005.

Okay, Sheet is a pitcher I am willing to take a chance on. He has to prove he is healthy, at least with the doctors. Any contract is going to laden with incentives, and I think Sheets knows that. On the basis he is healthy, I could see him as a back of the rotation starter. He has great stuff and knows how to pitch. Definitely worth a look.

Whoa. Bad on my part. I missed the $12 million per season price tag. A back of the rotation starter doesn’t make $12 million. I think Sheet is over priced asking for that much money. He has the pedigree, but can he stay healthy? I can see $6M guarantee with hefty kicker for number of starts and innings pitched; maybe totaling $9-$10M. If he proves he’s healthy there can be a guaranteed option for a second and third year.

12 mill is quite high for someone who hasn’t pitched in a year. How about 8mill. We can start there. Sheets or Bedard should be the Mets #2 SP next year.

I like Bedard. I saw him pitch with the O’s more than a few times. Question is, is HE healthy? I would be willing to take a risk on one reclamation project, not two. My first choice is Sheets.

    sheets is a joke..12 mill..never been healthy..if harden got a 7.5 w/ incentives..sheets should be getting that at most…

I think Sheets will get 8 mill. He must not be full recovered if he’s thinking that high.

6 million w/ incentives to twelve? fine, but not a penny more than 6 million guaranteed,…unlike Penny he hasn’t pitched in a year and frankly was an injury risk prior to that.

I just think 12 is too much. 6 guarnteed with 2 in incentives

    Sheets too high
    Harden gone
    Wolf signed
    Halladay goin’ to Anaheim

anyone else worried that if Lackey doesn’t want to be a Met that w’ere basically screwed.

      Sheets will lower price.
      What about Bedard
      What about Pineiro
      What about Marquis
      We are not screwed YET.

when the padres non-tender kevin correia I think we should sign him for pretty cheap..then lackey…with plenty of money and prospects to spare for left field, bullpen, catcher and whatever we want to do with second base..Phillips!

Word. $12M? Dude is bugging. Like someone said earlier, $6M is reasonable, with say another 4 for making 30 starts and another 2 for reaching 200 innings. But 12 outright, no way.

If the Mets sign Sheets I have no problem with that. If he gets more than 2 million plus incentives I’m going to throw up. After all his injuries and than missing all of last year MLB better check Sheets for the crack he is smoking if he thinks he is getting 12 million a year.
As for the Mets I like Lackey, Marquis, Pinero and Bedard in that order. Bedard moves up the list to #2 if they get him for a low contract with incentives.

I don’t think we will be screwed but a lot of things would have to go right so that we won’t be screwed

Like atleast 2 of Maine Pelfrey and Ollie fixing their problems and pitching the way they have shown they can in the past.

I dont like the idea of relying on that to happen….although I believe it is possible for them to pitch more consistantly I dont want to go into the season relying on that

If the mets sign lackey I would be more comfortable going into the season

Just sign Lackey and Marquis. Trade for a left fielder who can hit 20+ HR and we can deal with for a couple years and let Fmart develope.

NOTE: I posted this in another post(s)

I hope that doesn’t happen. Not that I don’t like Lackey b/c I do but there will be more and better aces next year on the FA market who the Mets should go after like Webb or Beckett. Next year, there isn’t good LF’s except for Crawford. This year there is only one ace in Lackey and two big LF’s in Holliday and Bay. I’ll be happy with either on eof them but I think we can wait for a real ace fro 1 year. For a #2 we can go after Sheets or Bedard. When healthy they are aces. For a #3 we can get Pineiro or Marquis.

12M? we are already paying 12M to one pitcher to do nothing, if Sheets isn’t ready that is another waste of 12M

give him like a base of six and lots of incentives

i want sheets but i literally laughed out loud when i read he wants 12 mil.. first of all, he gave up on his team in the midst of a playoff run in 08, then he would have robbed the rangers of their money over 2 years if he didnt fail his physical, the fact that he wants 12 mil is comical, i would give him 12 dollars and start from there

i am one to stay patient but this team needs a lot of work and we have a lot of money to spend, lets get to it so we are not left with the “oliver perez” of this offseason .. aka joel pineiro

I understand your point, but Pinero’s numbers are much better than OP

Juan Rivera could work. I just am not all in on over spending on Holliday. Figured spend on pitching this season. Lackey is good as was tough in the post season. He also might be less money than Beckett might get. I say Marquis because I thought Piniero had some arm issue last year. Marquis has been more consistant.

I would offer a Pedro-style arrangement. If he takes it, he takes it. Shame on the team that gives him this kind of contract he seeks. Guarantee $1m with incentives based on appearances, performance.
