Jordan Bastian of MLB.com says while it now appears that both the Angels and the Phillies are leading the Roy Halladay sweepstakes, a deal taking place at the winter meetings is unlikely.
According to Bastian, Blue Jays GM Alex Anthopoulos indicated he doesn’t expect to have any moves to announce during the meetings, but “things can change so fast.”
Update, 8:35 pm, by Michael Baron:
According to Jordan Bastian of MLB.com, a Major League source says Roy Halladay might waive his no-trade clause and OK the deal to the Angels.
Update, 7:55 pm, by Michael Baron:
Bob Elliott of the Toronto Sun says the Angels have taken the lead in the Halladay sweepstakes, offering Joe Saunders, Erick Aybar, and outfield prospect Peter Bourjos to the Blue Jays for the Toronto ace.
…assuming this is enough, and this does look to be an impressive package, i wonder if doc would approve a trade to the west coast, considering he has stated desire to train in florida…that said, the Angels give him a great chance to win a ring, and besides a big extension, that seems to matter the most to him…
That said, Jon Heyman of SI.com says the Phillies have joined the Halladay sweepstakes.
…this would not exactly be ideal, but despite acquiring Cliff Lee this past July, they still have the prospects and the major league talent to get a deal done…the question is now whether or not they would be able to extend doc, considering they have Lee and others to worry about in the years ahead…
Original Post, 9:02 am:
“The Angels, Red Sox and Yankees, in that order for now, are pursuing Toronto ace Roy Halladay,” says Troy Renck in the Denver Post.
This morning on ESPN Radio’s Mike and Mike in the Morning, ESPN.com’s Buster Olney said the Angels match up best with the Blue Jays, and they are open to trading infielder Erick Aybar, who was the sticking point in a Halladay-Angels deal last summer.
Last night on 1050 ESPN Radio, ESPN.com’s Jayson Stark said he believes, if the Blue Jays make a deal, it will be with the Angels.
According to Joel Sherman in the New York Post, even after acquiring OF Curtis Granderson from the Tigers, the Yankees continue to talk with Toronto about Halladay, since Brian Cashman still has prospect Jesus Montero, Joba Chamberlain and Phil Hughes.
In the end, ESPN’s Peter Gammons said on air yesterday he believes Halladay will be pitching for the Blue Jays on Opening Day, who will then look to trade him at the deadline, despite his request for a trade by Spring Training.

I wouldn’t jump off a bridge if the angels got him, they are far enough away i won’t have to deal with them
Hows this for Crazy, I hope the phillies get Roy Halladay.
Think about it, their payroll will be shot, they won’t be able to sign any stars for a while. They will also would have given up all their best prospects between Cliff Lee and Halladay.
Now this also forces the mets into a situation. A situation where they need to spend, and they would on Holliday and Lackey.
Now the Phillies will resign Halladay but can they resign Lee? Doubt it, so this seems to be a one-year thing, that could hurt them for a long time.
Very possible. But they’d smack around the National League all of 2010 if that happened.
Very good point. I’m with you.
Maybe they would, or maybe they wouldn’t. The Best team on paper doesn’t always work out. If the Mets added Lackey and Holliday, they’d put up a good fight.
agreed and I like Johan Lackey more than Halladay Lee…..Santana and Halladay are almost even but you gotta give the slight edge to Santana
As for lee and lackey when it comes to recent success you would have to pick lee hands down but to be honest if you look at the numbers lee had only that one great year in 08 other than that he is solid at best….plus he is getting old I doubt he duplicate his 08 numbers.
If the Phillies trade for Halladay, they will be favorites to reach the World Series again. The Mets should pray they don’t have to face the following rotation during their 19 meetings next season and beyond:
Halladay
Lee
Hamels
Joe Blanton/AJ Happ
Moyer/Martinez
after Lee the rest of the rotation is nothing to be afraid of….those bottom 3 are a lot like the Mets bottom 3 except older with less potential
Hamels is good. Why is he in the bottom 3 then.
Cole Hamels finished 10-11 with a 4.32 ERA last year with the Phillies who won 93 games
Mike Pelfrey went 10-12 with a 5.03 ERA with the Mets who won only 70 games
Pretty similar numbers other than the ERA
But I would have to think If the Mets had a healyth team and won 93 games that Pelfrey would have won more than 10 games
And in the same way if Philly had the injuries the Mets had and only won 70 games I would have to think Hamels would have not been able to win those 10 games he won
So I feel that both bottom 3 pitchers in the Mets and Phillies rotation would be very similar Assuming the mets get lackey and the Phillies get Halladay
So assuming the Mets were healthy and won 93 games in 09 I would think Pelfreys numbers would look similar to this 13-8 4.85 ERA….which is not amazing but It is better than what Hamels did with a 93 win team.
If the Phillies lost players due to Injury I would think Hamels numbers might have been something more than this 8-12 4.67 ERA
For one-year, i’d take the pain for a long time of dominating the NL East with the Mets.
I hate hearing people being so passive about this. How many people said after 2008 “I would rather the Mets just be out of it by the All-Star break and not jerk us around like this.” and then when it happens they realize they were wrong it sucked worse. Now people are saying i could put up with another year of phillie rule if it ruins their overall organization. Well I for one am SICK AND TIRED of waiting. I got my taste in 2006 and I WANT IT BACK DANGIT!! Enough with this well if we wait for… or if we just wait until….NO 2010 BETER BE THE METS YEAR!!!! WHO’S WITH ME!!! and not only that but the Mets and Phillies going neck and neck with a bitter hatred for each other is fun. I missed it last year and altough the phillies may notadmit it i bet they missed us.
See this is why you are not the General Manager of a baseball team. You need to wait your turn, and if the Phillies are going to get Halladay then there is nothing the Mets can do but fight an uphill battle.
Santana
Lackey
VS
Halladay
Lee
Thats a great matchup.
Sanatana is better than Doc and Lackey is better than Lee. Now that I think of it, Lackey and lee may be equal.
Send this guy to Cali so we can all move on, for the love of God.
Toronto would rather send him to the Angels, I’m sure. That said despite what been reported I seriously doubt the Phillies will be a legitimate player in this given their finances, I mean sure they got the pieces to get him, but what’s the point if you are gonna have to trade him at the deadline, because you can’t extend him, if he’ll even wave without being extended, my guess is the only way that he waves without an extension is if he was going to the Yanks or the Red Sox who are set up to consistently compete.
I called it. This is what I predict:
Bay: Mets or Boston(depends if the Mets get Holliday)
Holliday: Mets
Lackey: Boston
Agon: Maybe Boston(If not, he won’t be traded)/Padres
Doc: Angels
For the sake of baseball and balance between leagues, let’s hope Halladay ends up in Anaheim, and not in the NL East, while signing a long term contract.
The Phillies can’t afford him and we don’t want him so I think u are safe there.
If Halladay goes to LA, I’m guessing they won’t pursue Lackey. This could work out well for the Mets!
NYM -Lackey
LA – Halladay
Boston – Bay
St. Louis – Holliday
Toronto – Piniero
NOTE: I posted this in the other post too!
I hope that doesn’t happen. Not that I don’t like Lackey b/c I do but there will be more and better aces next year on the FA market who the Mets should go after like Webb or Beckett. Next year, there isn’t good LF’s except for Crawford. This year there is only one ace in Lackey and two big LF’s in Holliday and Bay. I’ll be happy with either on eof them but I think we can wait for a real ace fro 1 year. For a #2 we can go after Sheets or Bedard. When healthy they are aces. For a #3 we can get Pineiro or Marquis.
On a side note, theres word that the Red Sox are interested in Adrian Beltre, whether thats completely true or not theres no doubting that the Red Sox have been looking to unload Mike Lowell. Lowell is a log jam for the Red Sox. How about Castillo for Lowell, I know the Red Sox do not need a 2B with Pedroia and Scutaro in there, but Lowells 12M to Castillo’s 6M would give them some extra money to use this offseason. What would they do with Castillo, hold em, stone em, whatever, he costs less and he seems like a guy u can throw on the bench and not care about as opposed to a stronger personality like Lowell’s, who has been quick to comment when things dont go his way. Mets could put Lowell at 1B.
Just a thought in looking at players that teams are looking to unload.
As badly as Theo wants to move Lowell there is no way he’d be dumb enough to take on what would be a 6 MILLION dollar bench player for Boston. Now If he had a taker for Castillo that probably is a different story.
Idk about that, Theo Epstein will even eat half of Lowell’s salary, which would be $6 million. With this trade, he’d keep the $6 million, and we might throw in a couple million.
If we just did a straight trade, and throw in a prospect, we could get it done.
Why in the world would you throw in a prospect in a deal for Lowell who’s making 12 million..
You wouldn’t, your right.
The Red Sox are willing to eat at least $6 million of Lowells contract with getting nothing back.
If they trade with the Mets they wouldn’t be losing anything
This is the trouble with the Mets…….Saunders, Eyebar,…we can’t compete with a package like that.
That why we aren’t in any Doc rumors lately.
Hey 7train, that is very interesting Idea. I like Lowell a lot and being on the Red Sox, he knows how to play hard and win. His leadership would be a warm welcome into the clubhouse too.
He could play first base for 110 games, and Murphy could play 50. Keeping Lowell healthy and fresh.
If the Phillies get Halladay I will freakin throw up, I seriously don’t think I’ll be able to take it
That’s funny because Ruben Amaro just told yet another MLB.com reporter that he dosen’t see himself trading for a big time pitcher. So somebody is blowing smoke,……
We can expect this kind of B.S, untill he is signed and again, I still don’t see the Phils getting it done.
Thank you for that info i was about to lose it
I hear ya, lol There just isn’t any way that I can imagine that Philly can lock up Howard, Lee, and Halladay all at once, and since Lee is younger and quite frankly every bit as effective as Halladay it doesn’t take a brain surgeon to figure out which one of the pitchers they would extend. So why give up atleast 3 top prospects for 3 1/2 months of Halladay, as I would think they would want to move him at the deadline, because obviously he’s more valueable than the 2 draft pics they would get should he sign elsewhere in the off-season. When you really think about it, it just doesn’t make sense for the Phillies to aquire him.
How the hell are the Mets not getting in on this? Saunders, Aybar and Bourjous are nothing special. Plus, Saunders and Aybar are in the arbitration phases of their career, so the Jays have to pay them more. You’re telling me a Mets offer of Pelfrey, Tejada, Martinez and one other prospect(lets say Niese or Holt for arguments sake) couldn’t get Halladay?
I agree I have been clamoring for Halladay for a long and usually get back long winded posts about trading the farm and how he’s 32
Well then you already know why! lol
I know I try to give up but I can’t help it, I hope he goes to the Angels
Maybe you should start listening to reason then. It will do you good in life.
lol
I fail to see how it’s not reasonable to want Halladay he is a top five pitcher and we haven’t even made an offer. If we made a reasonable offer and it was rejected well i don’t want to empty the farm but I’d like to see our name pop up every once in a while
Exactly. The guy is a perennial Cy Young candidate, and has proven his is a durable guy. Mets add him, you don’t need to sign Halladay, you could get away with a Marlon Byrd type, because the Mets would have a 1-2 better than most teams.
I hear ya man and i’m right there with ya
There is a very big difference in what Omar and Company want and what is best for the franchise as a whole. Believe me if the farm system wasn’t so thin right now he would be in on Halladay, but they have spent the last 2 seasons rebuilding that farm, to the point where it’s somewhat respectable but we need it to build atleast one more season. If Omar were to burn 3 prospects or better now, we would be right back to square one with the farm, and that hurts more than anything. There is a reason Boston, Philly, Yankees and the Angels get alot of good players via trade. Why, because the believe in building the farm and growing from within (not so much the yanks for that 2nd part) and when they do have a guy like a Halladay, AGon, Beckett,…..etc they can get them because they have the pieces in their farm system. This is the exact reason they brought Wayne Krivsky back to help rebuild the farm and scout the young talent because that’s what he does best.
Maybe you are right and I don’t want to be without depth but I still want us to be in on every deal and at least make an offer, I assume it would include Pelfrey and possibly Parnell which are both on the ML roster and replacable.
oof, and i was saying Pelfrey/Murphy/prospect was enough … wrong again. That is some package from Angels (too much!!)
What? It’s a steal for the Angels. Saunders is already 28, and will be eaten alive in the AL East(Boston is the only team to have a sub .800 OPS against him, and its still in the high .700′s). Outside of his W-L record, his other stats are average, no way he sniffs 16 wins with the Jays.
Aybar is a nice player, but nothing special, and will earn a few million in arbitration(as will Saunders). Bourjos just reached Double-A, and I’d imagine is about 2 years away.
Really? you probably are right, don’t know much about Saunders, but from W-L, looks like he knows how to win .. impressive record for a few years in a row for a good team. Aybar hit .312, supposedly good in field, looks like a nice player. What’s deal on prospect? I don’t know, looks like pretty nice package to me, and certainly better than the Pelfrey/Murphy/Tejada offer i was pushing.
Yeah but that’s cause no one really regards Murphy highly. Saunders has a nice W-L record, which I acknowledged, but it’s a mirage based on playing for a first place team. Aybar’s OPS+ was 103, barely above league average. And both players are due for big raises in arbitration.
