The Mets signed 39–year-old RHP Elmer Dessens to a minor-league contract, according to the Associated Press.
Dessens will earn $700,000 if added to the 40–man roster.
He had a 3.31 ERA in just 28 relief appearances for the Mets last season, during which left-handed batters hit .193 against him. He struck out 14 batters and walked 10, while allowing five home runs.

thank goodness
i know it was on hold for so long i was loosing my mind
*losing
Good thing it was a minor league contract. And btw, I can’t be buggin’ on this guy b/c I forgot who he is. He might be really good for all I know.
lol, he’s not. he’s been in the bigs for a long while tho
He was actually one of the more reliable arms out in the pen by the end of the ’09 season. I can’t belive he signed that cheap, good job Omar.
Thx you 2
Thank You Omar I never doubted you for a minute! (damn that was close)
IN OMAR I HOPE!!!!
Yea he was solid for us, hopefully he can duplicate that.
can’t believe he sign that cheap,……and a minor league deal even. Although I bet he ends up on the big club sooner rather than later, because will all the other needs I don’t see Omar messing with the pen too much(outside of another lefty of course,)
Like Biemel.
They probably will look at him but he won’t be cheap, and really if they are smart they will find a quality guy of the non- tender list and sign him cheap and focus the big money on Lackey/Bay or Holiday.
I thought he would be cheap like 2 mill. Considering Putz got 3 mill and is a lot better than Biemel, he should go for 2 mill.
The only reason Putz only got 3 million is because he is coming off an injury riddled season, in fact if he were healthy the whole ’09 season the Met’s probably pick up his option. Biemel should command atleast 3 million (maybe more).
Where can I buy World Series tickets? Phillies better watch out, there’s a new team to beat now.
Stubhub (I know you were joking……hopefully)
Sweet!
Off topic- By the way, did any one watch Loud Mouths? They said that the Phils might not be in on Doc any more because the GM diesn’t want to part with his prospects. Hopefully, they are right and Doc is in Anaheim next year.
I’m not suprised, as I said many times on here that the Phils have the pieces to get Halladay, but it not the getting for them it’s the keeping! and I really don’t see them locking up LEE, Howard and Halladay all at once, they are gonna have upwards of 45 million on Lee and Howard alone! Why burn that many prospects with no chance of landing him long term?
i hope this is not our big bullpen signing for the offseason
this is great. I mean..seriously guys..I can’t believe some of the posts here. The man is 39 years old. He will be lucky to be on the roster when the season starts.
Nice guy to have in the minors but let not over do it here.
Don’t worry people,I hear the Mets are ready to sign Sidd Finch jr.
I really did miss all the sarcasm while I was away…
He’s a 4A player that did okay last year, no big deal….
so lets see what we’ve done to date … signed 2 backup catchers and a 40 yr old journeyman reliever.
thank god we got that done.
once again it looks as if the mets are waiting for things to come and fall in their lap.
not exactly what you want to see a team that desperately needs to show its fans that it really wants to put the best team possible on the field in 2010.
they also signed a 2mill BU MI that just had surgery on both thumbs.
don’t want to forget that key move!
i really dont get that move, im still confused on that one, disagree with cjr126 though.
cheap deal, reliable arm last season, not a bad era, not a bad move
More like Smellmer Messens…!
/waits for hi five…
It’s wonderful to see so many like-minded people on this site. While it is nice to have a semi-dependable, past his prime, mop-up pitcher in the organization, the comments reinforce the confusion the fan base has about what Minaya is doing. Unless the team has a season like 2009, this signing will not impact the club.
Good move for depth, Dessens was big league quality last year and to get him to go to AAA is a nice move. Good to know he’ll be there if they need him.
regarding second lefties, Adam Bostick signed with the Royals on a minor league deal. He has been with the Mets AAA teams since the Lindstrom/Owens trade, and would have been a cheap internal option to compete for that spot. Missed opportunity imo.
