Note: Jose Reyes on WFAN at 3 PM

By Matthew Cerrone on Dec 16, 2009, 2:52 pm

Earlier today, Mets SS Jose Reyes talked for roughly one hour with Mike Francesa on WFAN, which you can listen to at WFAN.com.

The following is a written recap of the discussion, during which Reyes talks about, among other things, his injury; his recovery; his goals for 2010; and his thoughts on Jerry Manuel; Willie Randolph; and the Phillies, who he believes do not like him.

Updated at 2:55 pm:

Reyes says he feels no pain, and will be ready by Opening Day.

He said this most recent injury is different from ones he suffered early in his career.

Reyes believes having surgery was the best decision he ever made.

Updated at 2:57 pm:

He said last season was ‘hard,’ because, ‘I’m the guy who loves this team and loves playing the game and being with my teammates.’  He said he did everything possible to be back on field.

Initially, Reyes thought he would only need one day off, when the team traveled to San Francisco; he said he got a cortisone shot in Los Angeles, who said he would be able to play not longer after.

Reyes said he is aware of this report in the New York Times, accusing his Canadian doctor of being involved in HGH.  According to Reyes, he only received plasma treatment from the accused doctor, ‘that is all,’ he did not receive any drugs, including HGH.

Updated at 3:00 pm:

Reyes said, ‘I love Jerry Manuel, he’s a great guy, when you do something wrong he comes to you and explains to you what you did.’

He seemed genuinely shocked at rumors that he did not get along with Willie Randolph, who Reyes referred to as a ‘father figure, who only wanted the best for me.’  He said Randolph did ‘the right thing,’ when he pulled Reyes from a game for not running hard to first base in 2007.  I was behind Willie 100 percent,” he concluded.

Updated at 3:08 pm:

Reyes is happy with how his career has progressed, saying, “I have good numbers for a shortstop,” but, “I can get better… I think sometimes I try to get too aggressive at home plate and I swing at too many bad pitches, but I’m getting better and better at that… I want to be more patient.”

He says he doesn’t worry about home runs.  Instead, he said he tries to hit the ball in the gap, especially in Citi Field, where he feels he can hit 20 triples.

Reyes says every team in the big leagues does handshakes like he does with his teammates.  He does it to keep the energy up with this teammates, adding, “I try to keep it fun.”  He said he doesn’t do it to bother the other team, he does it for the Mets.  He says he has no interest in changing who he is.

Updated at 3:17 pm:

He says Carlos Delgado had been the leader of the team the last few seasons.

Reyes said Jason Bay is a ‘good guy,’ and ‘a very good player.’

He said David Wright is a superstar, a ‘great guy,’ and a leader in the clubhouse.  Reyes believes Wright will return to hitting 30 home runs next season.

“I love it,” he said, when asked about New York City.  “You have to play right and play hard, day in and day out and if you do that they’re gonna love you.”

His best day on the Mets, he said, was when they clinched the NL East in 2006.  His worst day was the final day of 2007.

Updated at 3:22 pm:

He said the Mets did a great job last season trying to get him back on the field.  He, the team and their doctors never once thought he had a calf injury last season, he explained; it was the Dodgers doctor who diagnosed it as a calf injury, he said.

Reyes said at no point last season, during his rehab, did he feel he was able to get back on the field; the pain was too much; and, if he could have been back, he would have been back.  He said he even tried to come back for the final three games of the season, but ended up hurting himself again.

Updated at 3:25 pm:

“When we lose I get angry,” he said.  “I talk to nobody.”

Reyes said he is the hardest-working player on the team; he is at the ballpark at 2 pm, every day, working hard before every game.

Updated at 3:27 pm:

Right now, he says, his goal is to be healthy.  He believes he can be better, and has yet to have the best season of his career.  “I’m still young, and I’m still learning.”

He says he enjoys watching Hanley Ramirez, who is a very good friend of his; Dustin Pedroa, who he said plays hard; and Derek Jeter, saying, “I love the way he goes about his business.”

In the minors, he said he initially wanted to model his game after Jeter.

Reyes said he used to crush Jon Leiber, when asked to name a pitcher he always had success against; while it is very difficult to face A.J. Burnett, against whom he does not have a hit.

He said he loves to hit in Philadelphia’s Citizen’s Bank Park.

Updated at 3:40 pm:

Reyes did not like seeing the Phillies win a World Series in 2008.  He doesn’t understand why the Phillies pick on him, and his antics, when Shane Victorino does the same thing.  “They win the World Series, and they’re talking about us, they say, ‘They get Santana, and don’t even win.’  He acknowledged, with a huge smile on his face, that the Phillies do not like him.

He said he will be the same player, physically, that he was before last season’s hamstring issue.

“People don’t worry, I’ll be ready in Spring Training, 100 percent,” he said, when asked if he had a message for the team’s fans.  “Stay calm,” he added, “We’ll be fine.”

The interview is over.  To listen to the entire interview, keep checking WFAN.com.

espn is reporting reyes was one of the players to get the plasma replacement from the doctor linked to tiger woods and giving athletes performance enhancing drugs

The plasma replacement therapy is not banned by MLB.

The doctor has also treated current and former Yankees. Did ESPN report that?

Francesa is one of the biggest jokes in sports media. He’s all bluster talking about his ‘sources’ and inside information “Blue Jays won’t trade Halladay unless the Mets send back Reyes,”, etc. etc. etc., and slams the Mets…unless they happen to be on his show, in which case he kisses ass and sucks up….its sickening. The interview with Minaya and Wilpon is one example.

Ever notice how if a Met is underperforming/failing it’s cause he’s soft. If it’s a Yankee, he’s “playing hurt”?

I for one think he’s a snake, the guy know he has a large audience so he influences lots of fans this way, just today, Francesca was going on with his typical Met bashing and while letting the fans know that they can do something about it with their wallets…what do you know, a fan calls in and mentions that he will cancel his season tickets, he’s BS to me at least. He does not want to see the Mets succeed, he wont say that but he will influence the no brain met fan.

      Dec 16, 2009, 2:21 pm at 2:21 pm #

Agreed. I think he was the one who made up the story about Halladay/Reyes and some took it as gospel that it was truth. Francessa is the sloppiest radio personality in NY when it comes to facts, prone to grand exaggeration and wild hyperbole, if not outright fiction. He tries to concoct stories and buzz that is especially negative about the Mets. Unfortunately, there is a segment of the Mets fan base that eats into his hands and is ripe for believing the hogwash.

Anyone listening to Francesca right now, this is the exact reason why we need to sign Aroldis Chapman.

    • VCarver
      Dec 16, 2009, 2:24 pm at 2:24 pm #

LOL, why? To satisfy the blowhard rants and fictionalized scenarios of this anti-Mets broadcaster?

I would hope that Omar and the Mets have more sense and just ignore the moron. They need to do things because they make sense for the Mets. Not because this blowhard with a big head says so.

      • Philnym31
        Dec 16, 2009, 2:38 pm at 2:38 pm #

No, not to satisfy Francesca, but I think Aroldis Chapman would be a great investment. Just the promise coming with having a young pitching phenom on the way would definitely lift my spirits. Get people excited again. To me, when the cost of second rate pitchers is 30 million dollars, I just think that’s a waste. I feel the better investment is spending half that amount towards a potential rising star like Chapman. He could be a franchise player for years to come, imagine him learning under the tutelage of fellow left-hander Johan Santana too.

        • VCarver
          Dec 16, 2009, 2:48 pm at 2:48 pm #

So then what does Francessa have to do with it? Exactly what were you referring to when you said “This is the reason?” Please explain.

Also, I disagree somewhat on Chapman. IIRC, he did poorly in the last WBC as well as his most recent seasons in Cuba. Correct me if I’m wrong on that. He’s not worth getting in a bidding war over.

          • Philnym31
            Dec 16, 2009, 2:57 pm at 2:57 pm #

He was saying there’s no excitement with the Mets. They needed to get off to a fast start this off-season and said that the fan base is in disarray and there’s no one available, on the pitching end, that can be brought in. I think signing someone on a potential path of super stardom like Chapman, although he’s young and isn’t fully developed, he would at the least instill the feeling of better days ahead.

            • Philnym31
              Dec 16, 2009, 2:59 pm at 2:59 pm #

Also, at such a premium position too.

            • VCarver
              Dec 16, 2009, 3:08 pm at 3:08 pm #

Why does it matter if there is excitement right this minute? The only excitement that matters is that which occurs — or doesn’t — during the season when the games are actually played. Are you suggesting the Mets should make a deal just for the sake of making a deal and to appease a portion of the fan base who are disgruntled? That would be the worst thing to do. This idea that they have to get off to a fast start in terms of making deals makes zero baseball sense. Championships are NOT won by teams that get off to a fast start in winter transactions.

As for Chapman, he is no sure thing. He pitched crappy at this year’s WBC. Any team that signs him will be taking a risk. He is certainly not my idea of instilling the feeling of “better days ahead” for the Mets.

                You are 1000% correct.
                For all we know he could be another Ollie;

Jose is actually a pretty good interview. He is being open, honest and answering Mike’s questions really well. I like his response when he asked him about the handshakes/celebrations. He basically said everyone in baseball does the same thing. He does the handshakes/celebrations for his teamates to help keep their spirits up. He also said that it is who he is and he will continue to be himself. Good for him.

Very informative and enjoyable interview…worth downloading from the FAN site for those who missed. I also heard the Francouer interview earlier and it was also very good. I live in Atlanta and did not like Jeff when he played…mostly I hate the Braves and he was a symbol of the franchise. I almost choked when we got him for Church. But he was much better for us and he was a real gamer. And he seems like a great guy. Now, if we can just start winning some games again….

I agree, that was a bit out of line, that may come back to haunt him a little but i’m sure he does realize that he is not really the hardest worker, it may have been more to prove a point about him being lazy or soft.

That was nice that he called his buddy David Wright a superstar, great guy and clubyhouse leader, but i do wonder about the knife incident, I hope its false that he pulled a knife on Wright last summer when they had an arguement over Reyes missing therapy appointments.

let’s talk a little about Jose from a publicity perspective. Listening to this interview, it gave me great pride to call Reyes our shortstop and this is coming from a guy in PR that sells B.S. for a living. Great publicity move and I thought Reyes was excellent.

And just for the Reyes bashers that get on the guy, when he was 19 and came up to the majors, this guy didn’t speak a lick of English. Barely a word. Now he’s giving a full hour sit down in-studio with Francesa. And a lot of him learning the language was at the urging of Pedro Martinez, who preaches to many young Latin players to respect the media members and learn their native tongue. My point? This guy works hard at every aspect of the game. I hope this core wins a title so that Jose gets the recognition he deserves as one of the game’s premeire up and coming players.

Wow. Some of you guys are really taking serious medications. I like Jose Reyes, but to say he is the difference in the team is not true. With or without Jose, the Mets sucked in 2009, and I’ve been a loyal fan for over 30 years. The rotation was beyond bad.

Facts – Without Jose the Mets were 5th in batting average and 6th in steals in the MLB. No our power numbers were not good, but Jose is not the answer there.

Pitching – We were 21st in ERA and 25 in K’s. Second WORST in walks.

I know that Jose is important to the Mets, but he is not more important to us than getting a legitimate #2 and #3 starter!!!

Now to act like Maine and Perez are going to all of sudden step up. Show me evidence of that happening and I’m all ears. Otherswise lets get some pitching. Harang-atang!!! Arroyo-Dois!!! Sheets-to the Wind, Anyone. PLEASE.

So your saying that the fans who wouldn’t trade Reyes for Harang are taking medivations. I wouldn’t be to sure about that.

I never said anything about trading Reyes.

I did say that he was not the problem in 2009.

Great interview, just finished listening and he’s right, the phillies don’t like him for some reason, i think they are just jealous b/c their fan base can’t name half the players on the team i want so badly for the mets to crush the phils, i gotta believe it will happen.

    Jose baby, met for life!

From reading the updates, this sounded like a great interview, I’ve gotta watch it. Can’t wait till spring training to see Jose in action!

I think people tend to forget just how much this team will change come 2010. Hopefully we should get…

    Full season of Reyes
    Usual production from Wright
    Full season of Beltran
    Full season from Johan Santana
    Improved numbers from Pelfrey
    Improved numbers from Ollie
    Improved numbers from Krod
    Improved numbers from Murphy/other

Yes, there will be some injuries along the way I’m sure, but add to that the free agents we’ll sign to improve the starting lineup, particularly at catcher and in left field, and the rotation and, while its not a championship caliber team, this team will be at least good next year, if not very good. Enough to make the playoffs good? That’s a different story.
