Buzz: The Mets are Fixated on Molina

by Matthew Cerrone on December 16th, 2009 at 10:47 am

David Lennon of Newsday says the Mets remain fixated on free-agent C Bengie Molina,” who is seeking a three-year deal, worth as much as $20 million, according to Jon Heyman of SI.com.

…it’s funny, because, personally, i don’t think he’s worth one year… so, i wonder how negotiations would go if i was GM of the Mets… i bet we’d enjoy a good lunch, though

…i had been saying during the Winter Meetings, last week, that the Mets would prefer to sign a catcher to just a one-year contract; and so, if molina is looking for three, the Mets might relent, eventually offering two guaranteed seasons, which i feel is a mistake, not just because his OBP and weight are getting dangerously close, but because he’s a 35–year-old catcher… and when is signing a 35–year-old catcher, without the DH, ever a smart move

Buzz: Jason Marquis is a Fit, for the Nationals

by Matthew Cerrone on December 16th, 2009 at 10:34 am

Free-agent RHP Jason Marquis told MLB.com that he would fit in with the Nationals.

Marquis was 15–13 with a 4.04 ERA in 216 innings pitched for the Rockies last season, during which he struck out 115 batters, walked 80, and got twice as many ground balls as fly balls.

He has been in the playoffs every season of his 10–year career.

“I want to play for a team that is headed in the right direction,” he is quoted as saying.  “I feel I can fit right in and bring a winning attitude to the Nationals.  Every where I’ve been, I’ve won.  I feel it’s not a coincidence.  I want to help a team get over the hump.”

Last month, Marquis told the New York Post he is a ‘perfect fit for the Mets.’

…from what i can gather, marquis is looking for a three-year deal, much like the three-year, roughly $30 million contract signed by Randy Wolf and the Brewers…

Last week, FoxSports.com said the Mets, Nationals and Orioles are pursuing Marquis.

Quote: Reyes on Triples, Love of the Game and Winning

by Matthew Cerrone on December 16th, 2009 at 9:03 am

Mets SS Jose Reyes talked one-on-one with Kevin Burkhardt for last night’s GEICO SportsNite on SNY, and said he never saw a team in sports suffer so many injuries at one time like the Mets did in 2009, and so he tried hard to get back on field last season to help his team, ‘but it didn’t work out the way he wanted.’

the best part of the interview, and the moment that got me most excited, was seeing jose’s eyes and smile light up when burkhardt asked him about the possibility of playing a full season in Citi Field… he said he believes he could probably hit 20 triples there in a full season… i agree… and i can’t wait to see if he’s right

“I don’t think fans know how much I love this game,” Reyes told SNY.  “They have to know that when I’m on the field, I give it everything I’ve got to put this team in the position to win every night.”

…i never questioned jose’s desire to play and be on the team… i was told that people connected to him and the team were worried he was a bit gun-shy, because of doing more damage to his leg… that is totally understandable, and a lot different than a lack of will… that said, i’m glad he is getting out there in media and trying to correct any misconceptions people might have…

…this is a HUGE season for jose, not just as the leadoff hitter for the Mets, but from a personal point of view, as the team holds an $11 million option on his contract for 2011… so, if he’s a bust in 2010, he could find himself as a free agent, looking for a new deal coming off back-to-back poor seasons… which is something, a few years ago, i bet he never thought would be the case… on the other hand, the Mets desperately need him to have a stellar year, because he is the key to so much of what they want to accomplish… and for him, a strong year will likely mean he gets to renegotiate a long-term extension with the Mets, including his option… to me, he’s the storyline this spring, and i am pumped to see him back on the field, because i think a lot of this team’s style and swagger flows from jose… the game is less fun to watch, and it just doesn’t feel like the Mets without him

By the way, Reyes will a guest of Mike Francesa today, in studio, on WFAN, at 3 pm.

Note: Live Chat with Francoeur at 11 am

by Matthew Cerrone on December 16th, 2009 at 8:09 am

Today around 9 am, Mets OF Jeff Francoeur will be a guest in studio on WFAN, with Craig Carton and Boomer Esiason, which you can listen to here.

Later today, at 11 am, Francoeur will be answering live questions from registered fans on Mets.com, which you can follow, here.

again, well done, Mets… there is nothing wrong with overexposure… especially in a time like this

Speaking of Francoeur…

In a post to Amazin Avenue, Sam Page explains why ‘Francoeur has the track-record of a great defensive outfielder, and we can probably assume he’ll be at least a good one going forward.’

i thought his defense was fine… it wasn’t as great as Omar Minaya portrayed in the moments following the trade, but it was more than fine by me… i suspect he will be better next season, having had ample time to learn that tricky right field corner… i bet he is more comfortable out there next season… my bigger concern is his judgment in the batter’s box, not his ability in the field…

By the way, tonight, at 7 pm, Page will be at the Hot Stove Huddle, at River in New York City, where Mets fans will connect to talk Hot Stove baseball… For details, go here.
