Buzz: Mets have not offered Five Years to Bay

by Matthew Cerrone on December 17th, 2009 at 12:09 pm

Buster Olney of ESPN.com believes Omar Minaya’s offer to free-agent Jason Bay is heavily back-loaded, so much so the true value is around the $60 million deal he rejected from the Red Sox.

interesting… i am not sure what that is supposed to mean, since it was reported they offered $65 million… last week i said the Mets would be willing to give a back-loaded contract to get one of bay or Matt Holliday, and, at the time, i heard they might offer something that would pay $10 million in year one, $15 million in year two, then $20 million in the final two seasons, and, if they absolutely have to, a fifth-year option

In the Daily News, John Harper says, “Omar Minaya is said to have discussed the possibility of going to a five-year offer for Bay,” but, “the club wasn’t ready to go there quite yet,” because they are not sure he has other serious proposals, and they do not want to bid against themselves.

..i still think the Mets believe they have a clear path to bay, it’s just a matter of discussing the details… what’s more, according to people close to him, bay is more than willing to play for the Mets, but, obviously, he’s going to do everything he can to get the most money and years on his deal as he can… the Mets have been telling people they’d like to get bay signed before people start taking off for the holidays, i.e., this weekend, no later than early next week, and the same can be said for bay… so, my guess is we will begin hearing hard news, regarding bay, whether he signs with the Mets or some place else, sooner than later
