Buzz: Reds and Dodgers talking about Harang

By Matthew Cerrone on Dec 17, 2009, 8:30 pm

Tim Brown of Yahoo! Sports quotes a source who feels a deal between the Dodgers and Reds involving RHP Aaron Harang is ‘not happening.’

Original Post at 12:00 pm:

According to Dylan Hernandez of the Los Angeles Times, the Reds are asking for one or two players from the Dodgers major league roster in return for Harang.

…from what i can gather, the Mets and Reds have been in talks this off season, though i have no idea if it is regarding harang, Bronson Arroyo, Brandon Phillips, or some other player… i have no idea what the Mets have to offer from the major-league roster that would interest in harang, nor do i know if the Reds are looking for a straight salary-dump… but, i have to think there would be a match some place

According to Cot’s Baseball Contracts, Harang will earn $12.5 million next season, but if he is traded his 2011 option becomes a mutual option for $14 million, with a $2.5 million buy-out.

…so, basically, trading for him would be like signing harang to a two-year, $27.5 million deal

The 31–year-old Harang has been 12–31 with a 4.52 ERA the last two seasons for the Reds, while missing time with a forearm injury, a neck injury and an appendectomy.  However, he was 43–30 with a 3.77 ERA the previous three years, while striking out 597 batters, and walking just 159, in more than 670 innings.

…like i said yesterday, i don’t see harang as an ace, but as a second-level starter, much like the Mets are probably looking to acquire… i do think the Mets are more likely to sign a pitcher like Jason Marquis, who they will consider signing to a two-year deal… however, marquis is looking for three years… i believe the two sides can work out a deal, eventually, if they so choose…

…the thing is, i’m not sure who i would rather have: marquis at, say, two years and $20 million per season… or harang at two years and $27 million, plus have to give up a player or two to get him…

Well Harang at two and $27 isn’t the same if the player you trade away has a $5 million contract for two years. Then it is the same as Harang and $22 million for two years. Plus this implies there would be no cash in the deal. Of course you would need to replace the player, but you may save in that as well.

sounds like Mets and Reds are talking about “Arroyo plus…” (plus who is not specified.” Also alludes to that it may be contingent on dealing another player on the Mets first… Im wondering if the other player is Castillo and the plus is Brandon Phillips…

I gotta believe if they were to make a trade with the Reds Arroyo and Phillips would be it, the player in question would almost have to be Castillo. At this point to bring in guys like Arroyo and the soon to be superstar Phillips I would eat half or all of Castillo’s contract and ship him somewhere,..anywhere but 2nd base at Citifield! I known that doesn’t make a ton of sense financially but believe me if the Mets were to sign Bay and pull that trade off it would go a long way towards getting the team and ticket sales pointed in the right direction!

I would go so far saying I would just outright cut him and eat the contract if it meant getting Phillips.

according to Cot’s Baseball Contracts, Bronson is in year two of a 2 years/$25Million deal, plus there is a 2011 club option

I’m assuming this was just an error, Marquis will not be getting $20 million per year. So 2 years for a total of $20 million vs. Harang at$27 million total, plus some sort of value traded away?? Marquis is one you can count on and you know what you’ll get. Harang is completely up in the air. Who knows. He was very good on some bad Reds teams, so it worth looking into. I just don’t know. We already have plenty of question marks in the rotation, do we need another one? and an expensive one too?

I would say no to Harang – especially at that price. That’s been the problem for me this offseason, I want to say no to a majority of the available players, whether they are free agents or available by a trade. That’s why I’m not killing the Mets like a lot of other fans are…I know that they have done nothing yet, but other than signing John Lackey I’m not sure anything would have really excited me. I like Matt Holiday but don’t view him as a $120 million player if that’s what it takes to sign him…I like Jason Bay but am not crazy about having to give him 5 years. I don’t think the Mets are good enough to really compete with the Phillies this year and I’m just not sure how much Jason Bay really helps them. I think they need 2 or 3 offseasons to really fix this team into a true World Series contender. The players they need just aren’t available right now, and I don’t mind being patient and waiting if it means they will build the team properly this time…but I know I’m in the minority of fans who has that kind of patience. I just want them to build a long lasting, high quality team…I don’t want one or two good years followed by 5 average seasons. Just do it right – even if it takes another year or two.

Bronson Arroyo had a great game at Citi last year

In addition, his stats at Shea were pretty good

I was at that game, and I have to say I was very impressed with Arroyo. Always pitches well against us. He’d definitely be suited to play here.

i would love arroyo on the mets…hes solid and will provide us with a realy positive impact on and off the field.
he played in boston and we know he could do it here…..he would also benefit from playing in spacious citi field as opposed to the hitter friendly great american ballpark

          santana
          arroyo
          marquis
          pelfrey
          perez/neise

would be a nice rotation, few guys that could reach 200 innings which would help our bullpen and give us some depth

i’m staying away from Harang …. he doesn’t really make us any better … plus, are you really going to pay a 4-5 starter 12 MIL …

i know i kid, sort of, but only because of Perez …. but at least he does have the ‘tools’ to be much better … its not likely Harang’s capabillity is going to improve.

    Brandon Phillips
    Bronson Arroyo

Mets offer to pay 1 year of Castillo’s contract.

If the Reds are trading the pitcher because they are looking for financial relief, no team will have to offer top prospects to trade him. The Mets may actually get him straight up for John Maine (two pitchers with potential, but were injured last season).

If the Mets want to get things done with the Reds I would be surprised if they couldn’t. Both teams have pieces the other want. I think dcgfan1 is close on the deal parameters but I don’t think the Mets would want to give up quite that much. Mets brass REALLY like Holt and I’m not so sure they’d be willing to do that trade. Substitute for someone else and Omar & Co. put the stamp on this deal.

im getting antsy … reading that article above posted by wally got me excited because there are a lot of different ways to make this team better … number 1) lock up bay.. 2) i guess sign molina, 3) attack starting pitching .. if they could get phillips, i really dont know what i would do, guy is a stud… i would take santos/blanco and phillips over molina/castillo any day

I would trade Castillo, Martinez, Niese plus for Harang and Phillips. This move, coupled with bay and Molina, makes the Mets better than Philly I think

      Dec 17, 2009, 9:37 pm at 9:37 pm #

Why in the world would you want Harang over Arroyo? Harang has injury history, while Arroyo is solid, not a superstar, but definetly solid, he could probably win 16 or 17 with the Mets considering his sinker and CitiField. And Martinez doesn’ t need to be in the deal, maybe throw Pagan or Nick Evans in there.

  16. rebels45
    Dec 17, 2009, 9:55 pm at 9:55 pm #

harang doesn’t really have injury history..last season he had a forearm injury and the season before that he had an appendectomy..every season he has been a starter in the majors was 200+ innings and he’s a number 2 starter healthy..not a number 4 people underappreciate him cuz he played for a crappy team and never got wins..plus his last 2 weak seasons (injuries tho)..harang and phillips is 100% the way to go..younger and he’s just a horse..guy goes deep in games and we need that..look at his strikeout numbers too and his era is sub 4 during his usual seasons..if that doesn’t say #2 starter idk what does

    • Mets5rocks
      Dec 17, 2009, 10:10 pm at 10:10 pm #

yeah, but you have the injury concern and take a look at the salary difference between Harang and Arroyo. I’d much rather have Arroyo.

can we all agree that trading for one of these 2 (arroyo, harrang) is better than anything that is out there through FA?

If the Mets can trade away Castillo Murphy Nick Evens and Niese For Arroyo/Harang And Brandon Phillips I would be so happy

The package is not impressive at all but it gives the Reds a replacement 2ndbaseman and three young players but the thing it mainly does for the Reds is take a lot of money off their payroll which is what they are trying to do

I would even throw Omir Santos in that package since he is expendable with the additions of blanco and Coste

so although a package of Castillo, Murphy,Santos,Evans, and Niese isn’t all that impressive but they would get a majority of cheap young players and Castillo…..which lets them save a lot of money not needing to pay for phillips and arroyo

    • djwill-son
      Dec 17, 2009, 11:41 pm at 11:41 pm #

So if the Mets can pull that trade off and sign Molina Delgado and Bay I think they would have a nice lineup

      Reyes
      Phillips
      Beltran
      Bay
      Wright
      Delgado
      Molina
      F-core

And if they have money left over they could sign Marquis

      Santana
      Arroyo/Harang
      Marquis
      Pelfrey
      Perez

      Any thoughts?

        Dec 17, 2009, 11:53 pm at 11:53 pm #

wow that lineup is amazing, even better than the phillies. I would love to see that, with that offense johan can win 20+ games easly.

        • djwill-son
          Dec 17, 2009, 11:59 pm at 11:59 pm #

Yea thats what im saying….The lineup looks great and the pitching isn’t overwhelming but it is solid

and the defense in the middle infield would be real good….the only real liabilities in the whole field would be bay and delgado….I think thiswould be a great team

do you think that package would get it done though????

  19. rebels45
    Dec 18, 2009, 12:06 am at 12:06 am #

lol dude..if we make this trade we better not waste any money on molina..i wouldn’t give molina a contract even if it were for 1 year..i mean don’t just think like the yanks cuz ur frustrating and buy whatever possible..you gotta be smart too..just get rod barajas for 2 mill to fill the 8 hole after we sign holliday or bay…get some pop/run production out of the 8 hole and strong defense..it aint an american league lineup..plus we still have money for marquis as well with a nice core in 2011 and affordable payroll

by the way..it would not even take that much to get harang/phillips..you could really just throw them something like maine, castillo, parnell or pagan and be fine..no doubt

    • djwill-son
      Dec 18, 2009, 12:13 am at 12:13 am #

Ok im on board with everything you just said…..I like barajas….he wont hit for average but how many catchers outside of mauer do???

      Barajas would be cheap

I think the Mets should get into serious talks with the Reds about arroyo/harang and phillips I think it could be real good for the Mets

      • djwill-son
        Dec 18, 2009, 12:18 am at 12:18 am #

One reason i mentioned the players I mentioned to trade is because the Mets wouldn’t need any of them(except maybe niese)

Murphy wont be needed if the mets get delgado Santos wont be needed if the Mets get Molina/barajas, Castillo wont be needed….Evans is not needed….Neisewould be nice to keep for the future

I think the mets could use maine in the bullpen and pagan is a nice 4th outfielder and parnell is a nice arm that throws hard in the bullpen

so i would rather trade Murph Evans Castillo and Santos if anything but either way I dont care if we could get phillips and one of the pitchers

  20. mets9268
    Dec 18, 2009, 5:57 am at 5:57 am #

The Mets should def. try and make a trade with the Reds. They should look to get a package of Harang and Phillips and if that turns out to cost too much they should go for Arroyo and Phillips.
There was some rumors floating around yesterday that the Mets could get Arroyo for Maine and Pagan. If they put Castillo, Parnell and maybe one other mid range prospect or Murphy if they will take him they can get Harang and Phillips. All of those players besides Castillo make almost nothing and the Reds are looking to dump some salary. Sure they would take on Castillo but he makes a lot less than Harang.
What does everyone else think about this:
Harang/Phillips for Maine, Pagan, Castillo, Parnell and Murphy.

If it were to happen I agree with what was said above and thats get Barajas instead of Molina and go sign DeRosa instead of Delgado as well as going out and signing someone like Garland or Marquis.

    Reyes
    DeRosa
    Wright
    Bay
    Beltran
    Phillips
    FCore
    Barajas
    Santana

    Santana
    Harang
    Marquis/Garland
    Pelfrey
    Perez
