Plain and simple…

From what I have been told, the Mets did not hear from Jason Bay today.

Man, this guy wants no part of us.

barrylyons December 18, 2009 at 8:25 pm

Not sure thats the case, he probably just wants more than 4years, and he knows he not going to get that from the Mets unless he’s got some other offer to give him leverage, and right now he doesnt have that.

MetsFan06 December 18, 2009 at 7:43 pm

Well they did say in the next 48hours so I’m not surprised yet.

hotcorner5 December 18, 2009 at 7:45 pm

maybe he can play in Japan

Furious Styles December 18, 2009 at 7:52 pm

The more time goes on the more I’m thinking forget this guy.

Give him 4 with an option and THAT IS IT.
Move on to Holliday.

The more I look into Bay’s numbers the more I like Holliday.

dreamer3kx December 18, 2009 at 7:57 pm

Im tired of both Holliday and Bay to tell you the truth but Omar is going to get one of them, both not worth the cash but he has no choice to be honest, he has a red dots on the forehead and Met fans are the trigger-men.

Jova1931 December 18, 2009 at 8:06 pm

Well, he has little levrage, so just move on to Holliday. A better option. Not an elite player but a very good one, better than Bay.
Or we can just save the money, put Pagan in left and sign Delgado. Spend some money on pitching and next off season pursue Lee, Beckett and Webb. Those are high quality pitchers.

DominicanBoy08 December 18, 2009 at 8:07 pm

what’s up with this guy? does he want to come here or not, just decide, enough already, move on and sign holliday.

ThatsMr.Shines2U December 18, 2009 at 8:08 pm

The day’s not over yet.

Tango December 18, 2009 at 8:09 pm

Well sooner or later Bay will face the fact that te Mets are the only team offering 4/5 year 60/75 Millions. If he does not wants the Mets just say it.
We put the $$ in another player. Just be honest.

DominicanBoy08 December 18, 2009 at 8:11 pm

exactly!

Coolpapabell December 18, 2009 at 9:37 pm

I agree but the Union will not stand for something like that. I agree though, just tell us the truth and we will move on. He literally has no place to go though. I would actually start getting hot and heavy with Holliday right now, to force Bay’s hand.

Time to call his bluff.

Jova1931 December 18, 2009 at 8:12 pm

Bay’s like an older, less athletic version of Nick Swisher who hits for a higher average. He isn’t that good and he’s trying to hold the Mets ransom. Try and sign Holliday. For a little more money and a few more years you’d be getting a better all around player.

barrylyons December 18, 2009 at 8:40 pm

You realize bay led all outfielders in baseball in both home runs and RBI last year right? And you compare him to swisher?

dreamer3kx December 18, 2009 at 9:33 pm

You’re kidding right, Bay is much better then Swisher, the guy carried the Sox for a good time last year.

jimyager December 18, 2009 at 10:00 pm

Look who he played for BOSTON RED SOX, look what kinda protection he had in that line up? If you where a pitcher who would you rather pitch to in that line up, Bay or Big Papi? Bay got more to hit because he was less of a threat than they other guys. He won’t have that protection here and look where he came from, the Pirates. How can he not want to play for the METS when he was a pirate?

Mets5rocks December 18, 2009 at 10:08 pm

Uhh, David Ortiz BA .238 28 HR’s, 99 RBI,………Jason Bay… .267 BA 36 HR’S 119 RBI’s,………..who was the bigger threat again?????

Sylow59 December 18, 2009 at 10:22 pm

What protection was he afforded while with the Pirates?

bayridgehodges December 18, 2009 at 11:18 pm

Just wanted to third the objections to that comment.

Agees Catch December 18, 2009 at 8:20 pm

I didn’t hear from him either

wannabegm December 18, 2009 at 9:46 pm

lol.

Elastic December 18, 2009 at 8:21 pm

Time to make Holliday a serious offer and leak it to the press.

bayridgehodges December 18, 2009 at 8:23 pm

Yeah, I was all about Bay, but as his lack of interest in playing for this team becomes more apparent, Holliday is looking shinier. The last thing we need in the clubhouse is that.

Mets5rocks December 18, 2009 at 8:24 pm

Silence is the only leverage he has left, but sooner or later he will face facts……if not oh well!

Agees Catch December 18, 2009 at 8:28 pm

I keep hearing that the deal is heavily backloaded. Inflation can make an equally distributed 4/60 deal look better than a backloaded 4/65 deal

Jova1931 December 18, 2009 at 8:36 pm

Since Bay knows the world will end in 2012 he figures he wants most of his money up front and not in a backloaded deal.
Smart man.

bayridgehodges December 18, 2009 at 8:38 pm

I would dare to suggest that the lack of the extra 5mil would make it look better than inflation would….

MetsFan06 December 18, 2009 at 8:35 pm

It hasn’t been 48hours yet so I didn’t expect it to be told on Day 1. However, it would be nice to know for Omar if he will increase the bid or just move onto Holliday. If Bay doesn’t answer us by Sunday night, we should just move on because he isn’t reliable and the Mets will go after Holliday then.

JohantheMan December 18, 2009 at 8:35 pm

Bay wants more than four years, he clearly thinks he was worth more than the 4/60 offer boston made him otherwise he would have just taken that offer.

Nobody else is bidding on Bay right now, I figure he’ll be a met soon enough but he’s probably wants the five years which I think they already know so what is there to talk about
And yes the did say 48 hours

Mets5rocks December 18, 2009 at 8:39 pm

Who said 48 hours?

JohantheMan December 18, 2009 at 8:42 pm

Olney said he could be a met in 48 hours so i assume that means they’ll talk tonight or tomorrow and finish up the contract

ThatsMr.Shines2U December 18, 2009 at 8:42 pm

buster olney Im guessing

Mets5rocks December 18, 2009 at 8:48 pm

He’s prolly guessing right along with the rest of us lol!

JohantheMan December 18, 2009 at 9:13 pm

yeah it’s pretty weird hopefully something happens tomorrow

Mets09ws December 18, 2009 at 8:41 pm

id offer holliday 5 yr 85 mil if bay doesnt respond by tommorrow night

Coolpapabell December 18, 2009 at 9:45 pm

I would actually throw in a 6th year right off the bat, with a team option for a 7th. and a backout clause after year 5. No fing around. I would get real serious and scare the heck out of Bay, and the Cardinals. 6yrs 102M

Mets5rocks December 18, 2009 at 10:09 pm

That would certainly get his attention!

eDaPS December 18, 2009 at 8:52 pm

It’s all the nature of negotiations.

However, if Bay really doesn’t want to be a NY Met, screw him.Let him go play in a fabulous baseball market like Anaheim or Seattle. Those guys really love their baseball out there….

mets520 December 18, 2009 at 8:59 pm

its a little strange, havent seen him speak about the mets or even his agent say anything about the organization but you cannot help but get the feeling that the newyork mets may not be his first, or even second choice…..makes you rethink committing the millions to the guy.

brye65 December 18, 2009 at 9:01 pm

WOW!!! After reading all posts bashing Bay and so mighty high on Holliday. It really comes down to the media and all the media does is put things in your head making something out of nothing.

wannabegm December 18, 2009 at 9:51 pm

Funny how one sports writer’s conjecture can play with the minds of us Met fans.

Coolpapabell December 18, 2009 at 10:09 pm

I was on the Holliday bandwagon for a while now. He is the best everyday player on the market, without question.

KTB December 18, 2009 at 9:03 pm

There’s really no rush for the Mets. The signing of “Iggy” Igarashi was a good move by most accounts. Not giving in to Molina is another good move.

The Cubs trading Bradley means anything is possible in baseball. Who in the world would want him on their team? Or Castilla or Ollie for that matter.

Anybody hear if there was a result on the Torrealba/Mets dispute? I live in Colorado and would rather have Torrealba at his much more reasonable price than what Molina is looking for.

ThatsMr.Shines2U December 18, 2009 at 9:18 pm

Id rather have Torrealba as well.

DominicanBoy08 December 18, 2009 at 9:27 pm

torrealba? the guy has never had more than 50 RBIs in a season and has no power. I’d rather have santos over him.

Coolpapabell December 18, 2009 at 9:39 pm

Rod Barajas.

Mets5rocks December 18, 2009 at 10:10 pm

He’d do! Sign him and let’s Move on!

steadyeddie December 18, 2009 at 9:21 pm

Is Bay on East coast time?
Did ya all say he lives in Washington state?
Maybe it’s only dinner time where he is livin’.
We can still sign this fool before the bars close.

Mets5rocks December 18, 2009 at 9:29 pm

lol!

sellitman December 18, 2009 at 9:39 pm

Pitching, pitching pitching. Forget Bay and start stock piling our lousy farm. From what I heard the Mets spent less on their farm system that anyone in the majors.

That is why we suck.

Flmet86 December 18, 2009 at 9:46 pm

Lets hope for a productive Saturday and they finally sign Bay. If they really want him then I think they will get him. Bay wants to make the Mets sweat so they will up their offer or counter offer or something. I would think a 4 yr 17MM with an option for 5 would make it happen. Though the 5th year option would be for less than 17MM rather than something like a M. Ordonez contract.

eDaPS December 18, 2009 at 9:53 pm

Jason Bay is not worth 17 mil a year. Now you’re approaching Carlos Beltran’s paycheck, and Bay could only hope to be half the player Beltran is. Honestly I don’t think Bay is even worth 15 mil. Unfortunately that’s his value in this market. If he doesn’t take the offer at or near what the Mets have already offered I say let him sign somewhere.

eDaPS December 18, 2009 at 9:53 pm

*somewhere else.

Coolpapabell December 18, 2009 at 10:14 pm

I would throw in a team option for a fifth year. Perhaps including a performance based option. Say if he plays 150 games and hits 30 hrs and 100+ RBI in year 4 of the contract, then that would activate the 5th year option.

whenslydale December 18, 2009 at 9:57 pm

when bay is called out looking at strike 3 in the bottom of the 9th down by one with
men at the corners, remember how he hard he worked to get his millions,
and how reluctant he was (is) to be a met.

this is not 3 years ago, even 2 years ago when money was flowing and the livin was easy.
keep signing players for 75 million and nobody will be able to afford going to citifield
cept for the ceo’s of city bank.

LongTimeMetsFan December 18, 2009 at 10:18 pm

Bay hit .360 and 1.168 OPS with RISP this season. What don’t you like about that?

Bay’s the guy whose hit 30 or more homers in four of the last five seasons and driven in 100 or more, 4 times as well. I’ll remember that well when the game’s on the line.

I think Holliday is the most overrated player in baseball. I’d take Bay over him in a heartbeat. We need a slugger and Bay is one – unlike Holliday who’s gap hitter. And my eyes have long told me Holliday is poor outfielder. And when the new defensive metrics become mainstream in a few years – measuring reactions, route taking, glove to hand transfer and other things – Holliday will be shown to be what he is – a poor outfielder. His body type and lumbering strides makes him better suited for the infield corners or DH.

It’s time however for Bay to come to some decision making. It’s 8 days now. Let’s get this done, or move on. I think his agent is pulling lots of strings – when the season was over, Bay talked of trying to wrap things up quickly. He’s letting his agent do his job but my impression of Bay is that he’d rather wrap things up sooner than later. Is he holding out for more dollars or years, or potential new suitor, or legitimately torn? I can’t answer that but I hope this wraps up soon so we can move on to other roster issues.

krumbledkookie December 18, 2009 at 11:46 pm

Bay is counting on the Mets flinching; he waited for the Red SOx to pose an acceptable deal, and when he didn;t get it, he “moved on.” He wants the Mets to think he’ll move on from them as well. So far, though, Omar has played it well. I hope he continues to do so.

JerryKoosman December 18, 2009 at 10:12 pm

Ummm, I’m glad none of you are the GM of the Mets.
Just chill. Games don’t start for a while. Expecting Bay to sign on your schedule just doesn’t work. Especially if your name is Buster.

Buster! For reals?

The Mets can’t appear to be desperate and Bay is just hanging, waiting. It’ll be OK.

MetsFan06 December 18, 2009 at 10:17 pm

I hope the Mets make a big splash this weekend by signing both Bay and Molina. Then in like 2 weeks from now, we can go after Sheets or Marquis. Then we can trade for Phillips and Arroyo or Harang and possibly Cordero. And in that trade I’d put in Maine, Castillo, Tejada and Mejia. I don’t think that the Cordero part of the deal will get done because he is getting paid 12.5 mill next year and we can get Biemel for like 2mill.

LongTimeMetsFan December 18, 2009 at 10:30 pm

When proposing a trade, you have to know what the other team needs. The Reds are deep in middle infield prospects, have no need for Castillo, and are seeking reduced payroll, pitchers and outfielders. Maine is arbitration eligible coming off two injury plagued seasons, hence might not be attractive. Pelfrey, Neise, F-Mart, Pagan might better align with their needs. I’m not saying all these guys should be included, but it may be more of what they seek.

And Cordero – an overpriced closer. There’s no need for him and his bloated contract. which guarantees at 25 mil over the next two seasons.

That said, all of us would love Arroyo and Phillips in Mets. This would be superb!

eDaPS December 18, 2009 at 10:40 pm

Here here! Arroyo (even Harang) and Phillips? That would be outstanding. Rumors state that the Mets and Reds have been having talks this off season. This off season, IMO, has seen some of the most reckless and inaccurate reporting by these “journalists” ever, though. Still, it would be awesome.

JohantheMan December 18, 2009 at 10:55 pm

I think the age of twitter has guys clamoring to be the first one to report anything at all

Bay is a slugger, he’ll still hit 30 Hrs in Citi check on the big bat
Molina – he has some power, he is a career 276 hitter and he hit 20 HRs last season not bad for a catcher. he knows how to catch, but 2 years max, if he wants three tell him to go forth and get his three years from somebody else
Sheets i’m sure is on the table, not too much money, incentive laden, I think the organization likes Pinerio and Marquis so one of them, Marquis wants to pitch here so may as well look into that

Phillips and Arroyo are both good, it may happen since Reds/Mets have been in takes not sure who the Reds want though.

Omar seems to be gathering relievers and bullpens are always up and down, we need to have a stock of arms ready to rotate in and out but not eat up too much money

BBmetsfreak36 December 18, 2009 at 10:41 pm

Id take Bay for 4 years easy. It saves money for Mark Derosa. But if the Mets are planning on giving him a 5th year or option. Id rather just move onto Holliday. He is worth the 6 years with maybe an option. Holliday I believe is worth that and is younger, hits to all feilds which is good in Citi as well as his defensive edge, and scores more runs that Bay.

Mets5rocks December 18, 2009 at 10:57 pm

Mark Derosa??????are you crazy??? 3 yrs at 18 million he wants!! PASS!

MetsFan06 December 18, 2009 at 11:01 pm

I wouldn’t give him that kind of money either.

JohantheMan December 18, 2009 at 10:50 pm

maybe they did here from him and nobody told matt?

JohantheMan December 18, 2009 at 10:50 pm

hear*

MetsFan06 December 18, 2009 at 10:58 pm

Off-topic:
If we cannot get a deal done with the Reds, it’s not a bumber. We can spend that money on

MetsFan06 December 18, 2009 at 11:00 pm

I didn’t mean to click submit. So I meant we can spend that money on 2 pitchers and another bullpen arm. I think Delgado will be a DH but if we have an extra 5mill out of no where, I’ll bring him back.(but I doubt it will happen) T

racemccloud December 18, 2009 at 11:30 pm

Every day that passes and nothing happens on Bay… it looks more and more like Omar is playing the market correctly. Bay’s waiting for an offer that isn’t there. Right now, it’s the Mets and Bay playing chicken.

Mets5rocks December 18, 2009 at 11:38 pm

Who gonna go B-gawk first? lol

racemccloud December 18, 2009 at 11:49 pm

Honestly, I know we’re all killing Omar… but the waiting game is one he plays well.

Mets5rocks December 19, 2009 at 1:21 am

This is true!

djwill-son December 19, 2009 at 12:05 am

Matt Holliday is very overratted whatever you do dont give up on Bay….Bay isnt the greatest but he is gonna give you the power you need for a cheaper price tag

Holliday will not bring the power bay does and he will be top out at around 30 homeruns while bay will hit atleast 30 home runs

dreamer3kx December 19, 2009 at 12:41 am

Agree, Holliday is so overrated, he’s very good but not close to what kind of money he wants, Boras said he is like Tex…….stop it Boras, no one takes you seriously. Omar should stick to his 4 yrs 65 mill for Bay, dont go over that, if we dont get him lets spend this money somewhere else and be creative instead of overpaying this good but not great players.

racemccloud December 19, 2009 at 1:35 am

Hey, I’ll be happy with Bay or Holliday, honestly… but I’d pick Bay first, because what the Mets need out of LF is not a pure hitter as much as they need power, and I see Bay as more of a power, HR guy at Citi than Holliday.

Either way, they need one of the two.

Mets5rocks December 19, 2009 at 1:47 am

The sooner the better! lets get on with it already!

mextache December 19, 2009 at 2:07 am

I would think because they can and might spend the most for Bay…that any other offers from teams (secret or not) will be brought back to the Mets to match or surpass.

The Zito and Texeira contracts were/are ridiculous…I just hope the Mets are smart about spreading their money and resources around to fill all their holes.

reillys5 December 19, 2009 at 3:53 am

i just want to win …….

Michael December 19, 2009 at 7:49 am

I don’t really understand the Mets obsession with Bay to begin with. Yeah, I can understand not wanting to deal with Boras, therefore Holliday, but eventually you have to bight the bullet and go after the better player.

steadyeddie December 19, 2009 at 7:53 am

Hubbuch writes in this morning’s Post that The Mets are in the drivers seat.
Says the “mystery team” was Seattle and at this point the Mets stand alone on Bay and Molina. Could be a great couple of days coming up!

Old Backstop December 19, 2009 at 8:13 am

People need to chill, big time. Most of those whining here impatiently understand very little of this business. There is no reason for him to rush and there is no reason for us to rush at this point. Just because some Mets fans are impatient as a result of last year’s awful season doesn’t mean everyone is going to change the way business is done to make them happy.

Even if Bay was a lifelong Mets fan, it would still make sense for him to hold out until he feels he is getting the best deal he could.

dreamer3kx December 19, 2009 at 9:22 am

yes, thank you, some fans need to understand this.
