Earlier this week, the Royals signed free-agent OF Brian Anderson to a one-year contract.
As such, Ken Rosenthal of FoxSports.com believes the Royals are open to trading OF David DeJesus or OF Scott Posednik.
In late-November, Rosenthal said the Royals had inquired about Mets OF Angel Pagan.
In addition, in early December, Joel Sherman of the New York Post said the Mets had been in contact with the Royals regarding RHP Gil Meche, who is due $12 million each of the next two seasons.
What’s more, during the Winter Meetings, the Kansas City Star said the Royals are open to trading a middle infielder, like 2B Alberto Callaspo.
According to Sherman, although the Mets are not interested in swapping Luis Castillo for Jose Guillen, they could engage the Royals in switching out Castillo for Meche, ‘possibly by taking another bad contract, such as those belonging to relievers Kyle Farnsworth or Juan Cruz.’
…much like with the Reds, it seems like there could be a match between the Mets and Royals, but it depends on what each team’s goals are… if the Mets want to shake up the roster, but keep the core in tact, and are willing to shoulder some of KC’s payroll, giving them a bit of relief while cutting a few bad contracts, these guys could certainly help one another out… the same could be said for the Mets and Reds… however, the Reds may not be as motivated to move money as they had been, now that they restructured Scott Rolen’s contract, which you can read more about here…
By the way, if you’re interested, you can also find me on Facebook, here; and on Twitter, here.

I’d be interested in Castillo for Meche +1 if for no other reason it opens up room to sign Orlando Hudson. Reports are, though, that he’s not going to wait around forever to sign so I hope if the Mets are interested they get him on the horn and let him know.
eh. I’d make that trade if you really think Meche is worthwhile (and they gotta take all of Castillo’s contract) but I’m not sure he is.
Yeah, so would I. I wouldn’t mind seeing this play out.
Why take on a bunch of bad contracts? Why not just drop Cadtillo if he is so bad?
Because he’s not. He’s actually pretty good. So you should try to get something for him if you’re insistent on signing Hudson/betteroption.
i think he played way over his head last year
Even though it was closer to his career numbers than 2008? He’s always been an excellent OBP guy, and that’s a fine thing to have in front of Wright and Beltran.
Way over his head? You gotta be kidding me. His stats last year were very consistent with his entire career except for 2008. If anything he had a down year in 08. Last year was an average year for him.
Here are his yearly career averages compared to last year
Career-2009
AB- 512-486
AVG- .292-.302
OPS- .723-.732
SB- 26-20
RBI- 30-40
H- 131-147
R-70-77
My point.
Who really cares? Just like with every rumored team, the Mets won’t do anything about it. The Mets’ plan seems to be to make the kind of moves that make them look more lame than if they hadn’t made any moves at all.
Yeah, I felt the same way after they signed K-Rod and traded for Putz. I swore I wouldn’t renew that day.
Yeah, Putz was amazing. Renew the day? what does that even mean?
Season tickets? ahhhh…
I’d take Alberto Callaspo in a heartbeat…Gil Meche, maybe because he has #2 stuff but he has never put it all together.
If there is merit to these rumors and these two teams have been linked, some good things can happen…
Not that we have the choice to make trades with any team we want but, if the option is there I’d rather have the combo of Arroyo/Phillips than Meche/?
Arroyo is a solid SP and Phillips is young and pretty good w/ the stick.
True. Geez, is Johan Santana Jr. old enough to sign yet? LOL…
Agreed, if we had a choice, no question that is the best move.
So I guess the going rate for mediocracy is $12M per year…come on…you have got to be kidding me.Yes,lets double dip into the Oliver Perez contract bag.Oh wait as an added bonus lets take on another bad contract…sweet!
All in the name of getting rid of Castillo…what a joke. We’d be much better off if we just cut him loose and ate the contract.
John Maine, Luis Castillo, Jeff Francoeur, Angel Pagan and Reese Havens for Gil Meche, Alberto Callaspo, David DeJesus and Juan Cruz.
Yes, I know, it’s never going to happen.
I think Meche would do OK.
Just OK.
And $12 million/year is a lot for “ok.”
I’d rather take my chances elsewhere.
If you swap Castillo for Meche it’s really only costing them $6M a year.
Yes, but clearly he has more upside than Castillo, and if the Royals took Castillo’s salary it might be a little more reasonable.
Get this done. Meche has upside and Callapso could be a star in NYC.
I would do Maine, Castillo and Pagan for Meche and Callapso today
Collaspo & Meche? certainly If I could trade Castillo & Pagan for them, I would do it.
Why bother looking at DeJesus? He is Angel Pagan, but more expensive.
Scott Podsednik is a Free Agent, his previous tem was the White sox, how would the Royals trade him.
Again,
the Royals and the Mets should connect.
The Royals were trying to trade Callaspo for a catcher earlier this offseason so why not offer Santos? (They were ofering Callaspo for the Dodgers AJ Ellis).
They also would like to move the expensive (for the Royals) Meche. DeJesus will soon become more expensive than the Royals are willing to pay.
The Mets should offer Castillo, Santos, Niese, Pagan, and for Callaspo, Meche, and DeJesus. DeJesus is a top-5 defensive OF and would be awesome in LF at Citi. Callaspo and Castillo are a wash but it would “mix-up” the roster, and Meche would become our 2nd best pitcher.
The Royals would get a TON of financial relief from this deal, plus Pagan could take over in LF or CF, Castillo moves in at 2nd, Santos backs up at C, and Niese can compete for a job in the rotation.
I think this is a good move for both teams.
Reyes, Callaspo, Wright, Beltran, Francouer, Murphy/RH, DeJesus, Blanco/Coste
Santana, Meche, Pelfrey, Perez, Maine
Not great but better….
It’s just sad that we have pieces that match up nicely with the KC Royals.
I mean, it’s the ROYALS…come on!
What a mess.
