The Nationals and free-agent relief pitcher Matt Capps agreed on a one-year deal, worth roughly $3.5 million plus incentives, according to MLB.com and Bruce Levin of ESPN Chicago.
Levin says Capps chose the Nationals over the Cubs and Mets, who proposed a last-minute bid to serve in a set-up role, but he instead preferred to sign in Washington to be the team’s closer.

Bill Ladson of MLB.com believes Capps will choose between either being a set up man for the Cubs or being the closer for the Nationals.
Last weekend, Anthony McCarron of the Daily News said the Mets and the Yankees had reached out to Capps’s agent, Paul Kinzer.
In order to make a legitimate run again at free-agent OF Jason Bay, explains Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe, the Red Sox would have to go above and beyond their current budget.
As such, Gordon Edes of ESPN Boston describes a reunion between the Red Sox and Bay as being a ‘long shot.’
Jon Heyman of SI.com agrees, saying the Red Sox would only be willing to offer less than the four-year, $60 million deal he already rejected earlier this off season.

“The Red Sox have not completely shut the door on re-engaging with either one of the free agents,” says Michael Silverman of the Boston Herald, who says feels the Sox are more likely to increase their offer to Bay than free-agent Matt Holliday, to whom they offered a five-year, $82.5 million deal earlier this off season.
Adam Rubin of the Daily News says Mets GM Omar Minaya has not heard from Bay and his agent in the ‘last couple of days.’

According to Rob Bradford of WEEI Radio, “The Red Sox have had internal discussions about extending their organizational budget to potentially allow for another offer for Bay.”
The Pirates have been in contact with free-agent relief pitcher Octavio Dotel, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
Last September, Dotel told the Chicago Sun-Times that he’d like to return to New York, preferring to sign with the Mets, followed by the Yankees.
The 35–year-old Dotel was 7–7 with a 3.58 ERA in 133 appearances for the White Sox in the last two seasons, during which he struck out 166 hitters in 128 innings, while opponents hit .221 against him.
…from what i recall, the Mets had interest in dotel during the 2006 and 2007 off seasons, but only on a one-year, incentive-laden deal…
In 1999, the Mets sent Dotel to the Astros with Roger Cedeno for Mike Hampton and Derek Bell.
