News: Astros Sign Brett Myers

by Michael Baron on January 8th, 2010 at 7:59 pm

The Astros have signed former Phillies RHP Brett Myers, according to Brian McTaggart of MLB.com.

McTaggart says Myers will earn $5 million in 2010 with an option for 2011.

…he actually says the option is for 2012, but i’m assuming he meant 2011…i think he is projected to start for the Astros after splitting time last year in the rotation and the bullpen…he only made 18 appearances last year as he had hip surgery which sidelined him for most of the year, but if he is healthy and his head is screwed on properly, he could be a valuable addition in Houston…

In 2009, Myers made 18 appearances and 10 starts, going 4-3 with a 4.84 ERA in 70 1/3 innings for the Phillies.

News: Mets Claim LHP Marshall

by Matthew Cerrone on January 8th, 2010 at 3:54 pm

The Mets have claimed 26-year-old left-handed reliever Jay Marshall off waivers from the A’s.

He had a career 7.66 ERA through 49 innings in 61 relief appearances for Oakland since 2007, while walking 22 batters and striking out just 19.

According to the Fantasy Sports Service, he uses a deceptive, side-arm delivery to get hitters out, mostly facing left-handed batters.

However, he doesn’t have enough of an arsenal to work regularly and he is too dependent on his slider.

in other words, he might be a lefty specialist… might be

Updated at 4:30 pm:

In a post to Twitter, Joe DeMayo points out that left-handed batters hit .164 against Marshall in roughly 100 innings in the minor leagues.

The Orioles will also send scouts to watch free-agent 1B Carlos Delgado next week, according to Roch Kubatko of MASN.

According to Kubatko, “They also have interest in Hank Blalock, Adam LaRoche, Russell Branyan and Chad Tracy, but only want to offer a one-year deal for any corner infielder,” while, “Miguel Tejada remains a long shot.”

Original Post at 8:37 am:

Ed Price of AOL FanHouse believes the Mets will scout Delgado during his Winter League game in Puerto Rico this weekend.

Buzz: Pirates zero in on Octavio Dotel

by Matthew Cerrone on January 8th, 2010 at 12:45 pm

“The Pirates have zeroed in on free-agent closer Octavio Dotel,” who they have already offered a contract to, according to Dejan Kovacevic of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

Kovacevic believes Dotel will likely sign a one-year deal worth less than $6 million.

Last September, Dotel told the Chicago Sun-Times that he’d like to return to New York, preferring to sign with the Mets, followed by the Yankees.

The 35–year-old Dotel was 7–7 with a 3.58 ERA in 133 appearances for the White Sox in the last two seasons, during which he struck out 166 hitters in 128 innings, while opponents hit .221 against him.

from what i recall, the Mets had interest in dotel, or ‘dohteal,’ as Rickey Henderson used to call him, during the 2006 and 2007 off seasons, but only on a one-year, incentive-laden deal…

Read: David Wright interview in the Post

by Matthew Cerrone on January 8th, 2010 at 11:35 am

In an exclusive interview with the New York Post, Mets 3B David Wright explains why Citi Field and a lack of protection in the lineup were not responsible for his struggles at the plate last season.

“I have all the confidence in the world that with the lineup that we’re putting out there next year… I’ll go out there and do what I’m capable of doing, and that’s driving in runs and scoring runs… I’m ready to go.  I’m excited.  We have a lot to prove.  I have some things to prove.”

According to statistical projections developed by Bill James, Sean Smith and the readers of FanGraphs, Wright will hit around .305 next season, with roughly 23 HR, 100 RBI, 40 doubles and 20 or so stolen bases.

that line is perfectly fine… i have no problem with it all… his issue with overreacting to the inside fastball actually started a year or two before Citi Field… and so, if what Howard Johnson told Bob Ojeda is correct, see here, i trust wright will be able to pull the ball at will more and customize his swing from at bat to at bat… in the end, to me, wright is not a one dimensional hitter, power is just one part of his game… i never thought he would be a 30 HR guy… i actually envisioned a more well-rounded line, like is being projected for him in 2010… and so, to me, .300, 20 HR, 100 RBI, 40 doubles and 20 stolen bases is about right

Read: Sickels Top 20 Mets Prospect List

by Matthew Cerrone on January 8th, 2010 at 10:12 am

In a post to Minor League Ball, prospect guru John Sickels lists 20–year-old Mets RHP Jenrry Mejia No. 1 on his list of the team’s Top 20 Mets Prospects, during which Sickels posts a grade and commentary for each player.

According to Sickels, “Mejia needs to refine his breaking ball, and a full year of Double-A and Triple-A is necessary in my view; but he also has number one starter potential.  I hope they don’t rush him… the Mets have something potentially special in Mejia.”

In a report last October for ESPN.com, Keith Law described Mejia as, ‘The most impressive arm so far,’ that he has seen in the Arizona Fall League.

According to Law, if Mejia can command his pitches better, and throw his curve ball more often, “he’s a potential No. 1 or No. 2 starter.”

Mejia was 0–5 with a 4.47 ERA in 10 starts and 47 strike outs in 44 innings at Double-A.

Interestingly, Sickels ranks RHPs Kyle Allen and Jeurys Familia ahead of RHP Brad Holt; plus puts infielder Ruben Tejada, 2B-SS Reese Havens, OF Kirk Nieuwenhuis and 3B Jefry Marte all ahead of C Josh Thole, who he believes will eventually be a bench player, due to his lack of power and mediocre defensive skills.

In regards to the team’s position prospects, he says, “Ike Davis should be a solid hitter, while Tejada, Havens and Nieuwenhuis can at least be contributors and maybe more.”

Last December, Baseball America put Davis and Mejia on their Top 10 Prospects from the Arizona Fall League, noting, “Mejia showed one of the league’s strongest arms,” while saying of Davis, “He has the raw power to hit 25-30 home runs annually.”

In the end, Sickels says, “Overall, I think the Mets system is stronger at the top than a lot of people think, but at the same time they could use more depth.”
