According to Larry Stone of the Seattle Times, Endy Chavez will hold a showcase for interested teams in March, and is willing to sign a minor league contract.
On June 19, while with the Mariners, Chavez was involved in a collision with Yuniesky Betancourt, and tore both the ACL and MCL in his knee, had surgery on July 9, and it was projected he would miss 9-12 months.
According to Stone, Mariners GM Jack Zduriencik said:
“Endy is, the term is ‘ahead of schedule.’ It’s hard to say what that is. I’d say he is working very hard at it. Last year, the prognosis was it wouldn’t be until July he’d be able to come back. I still think that’s up in the air. Endy has a lot of work to do to get to a point he can go out on a field, and even at that, how long does it take to get that knee into a baseball playing condition? It’s an unknown. We’re all pulling for him, because we love him. He’s a great young man. But that has to be addressed, and none of us has the answer.”
…it’s hard to say where this injury leaves him as far as his defensive range is concerned…i have to think that even at full force, Endy will lose a step or two and his value is in a combination of his defense and speed off the bench, as he was one of the best defensive outfielders in the league prior to this unfortunate injury…i’m certainly pulling for him and wouldn’t be opposed to him returning to the Mets in some capacity this season, but this injury is obviously a big concern…
According to Chavez’s agent, Peter Greenberg, there are many teams interested in Chavez, but if he remains unsigned, he would begin rehabbing with Jose Reyes in New York.
Chavez appeared in 54 games last season with Seattle, and in 161 at bats he hit .273 with two home runs and 13 RBI and nine stolen bases.
