Free-agent 1B Carlos Delgado played the field for five innings for Gigantes de Carolina in Puerto Rico yesterday.
Delgado is 6 for 17 with a walk and three strike outs in five games this winter, while going 6 for 9 against left-handed pitching.
According to reports last week, the Mets and Orioles planned to scout Delgado in Puerto Rico last weekend.
According to Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe, “The Mets continue to have interest, but could have competition from Baltimore,” who are very interested in him as a first baseman.
In a post to his blog last week for the New York Post, Joel Sherman said the Mets began the off-season ready to move on from Delgado, but now that he is playing again in Winter Ball, team officials are suddenly sounding very much like an organization that wants him back, assuming he will sign contract similar to Troy Glaus, and if ‘he can play multiple days in a row at first base and can move in the field and on the bases without a noticeable limp or impairment.’
Speaking of first basemen…
The Giants signed free-agent Aubrey Huff to a one-year, $3 million deal, according to CBS.
The 33–year-old Huff hit just .241 with 15 HR, 30 doubles and 85 RBI in 150 games in 2009.
