Quotes: Johan Santana on Today’s Bullpen Session

by Matthew Cerrone on January 26th, 2010 at 2:13 pm

Johan Santana threw a 25-pitch bullpen session this morning in Port St. Lucie.

He told reporters he was very excited with how he felt today, “I felt pretty good, the ball was coming out pretty good, I feel like I did my mechanics with no problem and I didn’t feel anything in my arm.”

He said he had been working on his mechanics this winter, using a portable mound, but to get out on the field and throw from a real bullpen, ‘and be able to go through my whole routine,’ is good.

Santana said he threw a change up and it had ‘nice motion,’ which tells him, ‘we’re ahead of the game.’

He explained that, last season, because of the bone chips in his elbow:

“I wasn’t able to finish up the pitches.  I wasn’t able to lift my leg the way I’m supposed to because I wasn’t able to reach out.  That is what I was trying to do today, to see that.  Today, I was able to see my leg when I finished the pitch and that’s big, to see that this early is a good sign… I just need to get back to being the old Johan and being aggressive.”

By the way, according to Santana, baseball is about having fun.  “That’s what I do,” he said.

News: Cubs sign 1B-OF Xavier Nady

by Matthew Cerrone on January 26th, 2010 at 2:06 pm

In an update on Twitter, Heyman of SI.com says the Cubs will pay Nady $3.3 million, with $2 million worth of incentives based on games played.

Original Post at 1:20 pm:

The Cubs have reached a deal with free-agent OF-1B Xavier Nady, according to Tim Brown of Yahoo! Sports.

However, as Ken Rosenthal of FoxSports.com said, Nady’s physical will be crucial, as he is recovering from Tommy John surgery.

The 31–year-old Nady had season-ending Tommy John surgery last summer to repair his right elbow for the second time in his career.

In an interview with WFAN in November, SI.com’s Jon Heyman said, from what he understands, Nady will not be 100 percent healthy and ready for Opening Day.

However, Nady’s agent, Scott Boras told FoxSports.com last week that Nady is on schedule in his rehab and will be ready for Spring Training.

Buzz: Mets to turn to John Smoltz

by Matthew Cerrone on January 26th, 2010 at 1:35 pm

According to Ken Rosenthal of FoxSports.com, the Mets will now focus on free-agent RHP John Smoltz, sincr Ben Sheets has inked a deal with the A’s.

Rosenthal says the Mets have not been aggressive in pursuing free-agent RHP Jon Garland.

it’s also worth noting that RHP Erik Bedard and Jarrod Washburn are still available as well, though i have not seen many reports of late mentioning these two names and the Mets…

Smoltz signed a one-year, $5 million deal with Boston last off season; after he rejected a one-year, $2 million deal from the Braves.  He didn’t pitch well in Boston, he was released in August, and then signed with the Cardinals, with whom he was 1–3 in seven starts with a 4.26 ERA.

Though he missed a game or two last year with shoulder tendinitis, and will be be 43 years old through much of next season, Smoltz has been connected in rumor this off season to the Nationals, Phillies, Cardinals, Dodgers, Mariners, Rangers and Orioles.
