Buzz: John Smoltz is Allergic to the Mets, no He’s Not

by Matthew Cerrone on January 28th, 2010 at 8:55 am

Smoltz’s agent told David Waldstein of the New York Times, a) Smoltz has not received a contract offer from the Mets, who b) is a team he would definitely consider.

“Smoltz is close to the former Brave and current Mets right fielder Jeff Francoeur, who has been trying to convince his friend to join him in Flushing,” says Waldstein.

Adam Rubin of the Daily News believes free-agent RHP John Smoltz could choose to wait beyond Opening Day, instead of signing with the Mets.

According to an ‘insider,’ Rubin writes, “he 42-year-old Smoltz could follow the route Pedro Martinez went last season – wait and sign mid-season.”

from what i can gather, the Mets have a contract for a minor-league offer out to smoltz… of course, he’s looking for a major-league deal, much like he signed last off season with the Red Sox, which paid him around $4 million… plus, i think he’s holding out for a spot in a starting rotation, so he can rack up a win or two for his career total… frankly, i’d think this Roger Clemens Model, i.e., sit out, rehab, be strong for 15 starts for a contender, would be so much more appealing to guys like smoltz and martinez, but i guess it isn’t… unless, apparently, it’s the Mets who are your only option
