The Twins have announced the signing of Orlando Hudson to a one-year deal.
…great… i look forward to, again, next winter, talking about how the Mets are trying to trade Luis Castillo and sign hudson… it’s becoming tradition…

Buster Olney of ESPN says free agent Orlando Hudson is closing in on a one-year, $5 million deal with the Twins.
…i understand it’s hard to bench castillo and his $6 million, but i really wanted the Mets to just sign hudson, especially if he could be had at this price…as matt said below, he is a tremendous defensive upgrade over castillo and the team would’ve greatly benefited with him in the clubhouse, especially if there are the problems which have been talked about over the past week…
John Morosi of FoxSports.com believes free-agent LHP Jarrod Washburn might retire if he does not get an enticing one-year offer from the Twins or Mariners.
According to Morosi’s source, “Washburn might decide to stay home in Wisconsin if he doesn’t get the right offer from the right team.”
However, in January, the Star-Tribune said Washburn turned down a one-year, $5 million deal from the Twins.
Yesterday, Jon Heyman of SI.com said the Royals might also have interest in Washburn.
The 35–year-old Washburn was 9–9 with a 3.78 ERA in 28 starts for the Tigers and Mariners last season, during which he struck out 99 batters, while walking just 49, in 177 innings pitched.

…by the way, i am going to start dropping in quick posts, like this one, linking to other blogs, pictures, video, etc., as a way to provide more material throughout the day… i hope you like it…
Tom G: You keep mentioning this McFadden’s bar at Citi Field. What does that mean?
Matthew Cerrone: McFadden’s has started construction on a bar that will be acceesable from the inside and outside of Citi Field, located on the corner beyond center field, off 126th Street… it’s the gigantic space that was unoccupied for much of last season. I was told it will be ‘non-private,’ which I guess means it doesn’t matter what ticket you have, you’re allowed in. They’ll have more than 100 HD televisions; a large menu, with burgers, buffalo wings, fish and chips, etc.; and they plan to do pre-game events, with bands, celebrities, and fans. I think it will be interesting, and I expect it to be a pretty cool meet-up before games.
The Legend of Cecilio Guante: Cute Stocking Stuffer or Daily Torture Device?
…ouch… i wonder if Adam Wainwright owns the printer company…
The Mets have signed infielder Jolbert Cabrera, infielder Luis Hernandez and LHPs Bobby Livingston and Travis Blackley to minor-league contracts and invited all four to Spring Training.
In addition, the team extended invites to RHPs Jenrry Mejia and Carlos Muniz, LHPs Eric Niesen, C Francisco Pena, 1B Ike Davis and SS-2B Ruben Tejada and OF Kirk Nieuwenhuis.
…that is awesome… i am excited to see mejia, ike, tejada and captain kirk in some games this spring… i am surprised to see pena on the list, as well… i had totally forgotten about him…
John Morosi of FoxSports.com believes the Mets are still willing to add a starting pitcher, “if the price is right.”
…that’s great, but it’s a pretty thin market, which, as of now, includes: John Smoltz, Chien-Ming Wang, Mike Hampton, Braden Looper, Noah Lowry, Pedro Martinez, Mark Mulder and Jarrod Washburn…
…any person i have talked with seems convinced smoltz and pedro will sit out until summer; washburn will sign with a team out west; and mulder will re-unite with Rick Peterson; i think it’s safe to safe hampton is not an option; which leaves looper and lowry… i think Mets fans will gag if looper is re-acquired… lowry is intriguing, assuming he is healthy… he was supposed to audition for interested teams this week, and i believe the Mets were set to attend, but he postponed the event for personal reasons… in either case, it’s a pretty shoddy bunch, though i’d still like to see the Mets bring in one or two players to compete in spring…
Speaking of starting pitchers…
The Mariners re-signed Erik Bedard to a one-year, $1.5 million contract, according to MLB.com.
…the buzz in MLB suggests bedard will not be ready to pitch in a big-league game until mid-May… i’d rather see the Mets sign a guy like wang anyway, if for no other reason than he’s on schedule, and he has been successful in New York before…

C Rod Barajas is still available on the free-agent market.
Barajas hit just .226 last season, but with 19 HR and 71 RBI, in 125 games for the Blue Jays, while hitting .267 against left-handed pitching.
…from what i can gather, the Mets have talked with barajas’s agent at various times this off season, though they hadn’t been very substantive talks up until now… the Rangers have had interest in barajas this off season, as well… i do think he is capable of cracking 15 or so home runs for the Mets, though he is generally inconsistent at the plate… also, he’ll play significantly better defense than Bengie Molina would have played…
…i believe barajas can be had for a one-year, $3 million contract… if this is true, i’d like to see the Mets acquire him, as i feel he and Henry Blanco would make for a terrific, defense-first battery, with barajas capable of driving in runs, since he puts the ball in play so much… unfortunately, both blanco and barajas do their best offensive work against left-handed pitching, as opposed to Omir Santos, who hits righties not lefties…
