Note: Daniel Murphy to Work with Keith Hernandez

By Michael Baron on Feb 07, 2010, 9:27 am

In a report for Newsday, David Lennon says Daniel Murphy will work with Keith Hernandez on defense at first base this season.

However, Lennon also says prospect Ike Davis could push for the job at first base sooner rather than later this season.

…i’m looking forward to the results from Murphy after working with Mex…he was very helpful for Todd Zeile when the Mets transformed him into a first baseman back in 2000, and for the most part, was very effective there…i don’t see Davis making an appearance at the big league level until September, at the earliest…unless of course Murphy finds his way to the disabled list for a long duration…

This is good news. I thought Murphy showed some flashes @ 1B last year, and w/ Keith teaching him all of the nuances of the position, he should continue to improve. I hope Mex is also tutoring Ike!!

Any chance Keith could just take the glove and play? Come on, Keith!!!!

haha I was thinking the same thing. Keith can coach him all he wants, the guy has stone hands and awkward feet. The best thing for Murphy is a good 2B with alot of range, too bad we have luis castillo.

Now if we could only get Koufax to work with Ollie…..

Don’t get too excited about Ollie learning anything. He has had Santana there for to years and hasn’t picked up anything.
Murphy strikes me as someone who would benefit from Hernandez. Much of his greatness was the identification of tendencies and situations, and not on athletic ability.

I remember when Pedro was on the team and he and Ollie were flying out to California for some game. A reporter asked Pedro what they talked about during the flight and he replied they really didn’t talk much as Ollie was playing videogames the whole time. That pretty much sums up Ollie in a nutshell.

That’s ashame. If he ever screwed his head in straight he still has some of the nasties stuff on the team. Sigh

I agree. There are a ton of grumpy Mets fans out here. I don’t know how you can expect more from this kid. He came up as a 3rd baseman and moved to the OF without a complaint (granted, he was awful). Then, when that didn’t pan out, they moved him to first and, again, he handled it professionally. He has a good attitude, he is willing to learn, and he has shown improvement at 1B. I say, give the kid a break. He should have a whole year to show what he can do. If he isn’t successful, he can be replaced by Davis next year. If he turns out to be good at 1B, than we have a trading chip (him or Davis) next year to lure a starting pitcher.

I’d be careful about getting too too excited about Ike Davis just yet. Seems he has some real problems against lefties. I look forward to having him be a contributor, but I think we should temper our enthusiasm a little. I think anyone who is expecting him to be a star is setting themselves up for disappointment. Solid regular is what we should hope for.

Yea exactly, i’m hoping Davis turns out to be another Keith Hernandez type with the glove and the good bat, but from what i’ve read he needs some serious seasoning against LHP…i dont have the #’s but i’m pretty sure Murphy was better vs LHP during his time at AA and now Manuel practically refuses to play him vs Lefties in the bigs. I think the people that say “if Murphy does good then trade him to make room for Davis” are drinkin the koolaid a little too quickly…Murphy hit like .360 at AA and had less strikeouts and a better OBP and as i said hit lefties better. Not saying Davis won’t be better, but I think people are getting a little ahead of themselves just cause he can hit some HRs

Anything that can help improve the defense is a great idea. Keith was the best 1B I ever saw play, so he can only help Murphy get better.

I’m just sorry he refused to go to winter ball to improve his defense.

i believe it was the teams decision that he not play winter ball to keep him strong for the whole season.

What happens to Murphy once or if Ike takes his job at first? Where else is Murphy going to play for Mets?

How about we worry about 2011 after the parade?

If it comes to it that all the prospects work out and Murphy is good enough to want to keep, that’s a good problem to have. Another year of seasoning in the minors, or include Murphy in a trade for a missing piece. Who knows.

Murphy is gonna be a much better first basemen, but he’ll be housing tootsie pops in the dug out and talking about how women belong in the kitchen. I’ll take that trade.

He’s thinking the following: “where is it written in stone that a prospect who has never played MLB will be the next first baseman?”

just like Alex Ochoa, Alex Escobar, Bill Pulsipher, Jason Isringhausen, Lastings Milledge, Tim Leary…..OMG – how about letting Ike Davis DO something first. He is a PROSPECT!!! – I would wager that Murphy will be just fine this year, and Ike Davis will be trade bait for a pitcher.

this is good news. and i dont kn ow why every1 is sayin that murphy is so bad at defense. he didnt really make that many errors, and he had way more range than delgado. this will make his defense a lot
