The Orioles could look to trade Ty Wigginton before Opening Day, according to Baltimore reporter Roch Kubatko, at his blog for MASN.com.
Wigginton, who will earn $3 million this season, after which he is a free agent, played all four infield position last season, as well as left field.
He hit just .252 with a .317 OBP in 161 plate appearances against left-handed pitching last year, though he is batting .282 against lefties during his eight-year career.
…the thing i have always liked about ty, when talking about him as a utility player or platoon guy, is that he has shown he can hit from the bench… he can come in to the game cold, and perform at the plate, which is not always the case with some guys… also, he’s a solid fielder, especially at first and third… he’s consistent at the plate, in terms of how he hits, though his results can be all over the road… to me, he’d be an interesting guy to partner with Daniel Murphy, while also having him fill in at other positions… but, at this point, the roster is pretty full, and it seems Frank Catalanatto, Chris Carter, and others, will compete for this spot, instead of the Mets trading a low-level prospect to get wigginton, who they would run the risk of having to put on waivers anyway…
…by the way, i can’t believe he’s 32 years old… Jose Reyes is 27… man, time is flying by…

No thanks. I like Wiggy. I’d have to think someone in the farm could do the same for the big league team this year. I’d hate to have to trade a player for Wiggy. It’d be just like trading a serviceable bullpen arm, for a less-than-mediocre aging outfielder… oh, wait…
Stokes was nowhere near a serviceable bullpen arm. He was a hard thrower who wasn’t any good. Not that GMJ is good, but at the price the mets are paying him he’s at fair market value, if not lower.
Wiggy is ehh, as NJ says below, if they didn’t resign Tatis wiggy could have been a nice fit for a bench spot.
A gritty player – always liked him – he had the one killer weekend a few years back against the Yankees where they couldn’t get him out. If it not for Tatis, HE CAN play first base.
3.5 mil for a backup player seems pretty steep. There was a point in time I would of liked to have Wiggy back but that time has come and went. If Tatis wasn’t signed and I knew the Mets weren’t having money issues, I probably would be thinking getting him would not be the worst idea.
If the cost is minimal, then I’m not against it. Wiggy is a grinder, who is an asset as a supersub but not as a regular. It’d take him over Tatis any day. The problem is the Orioles would want something of some value, which the Mets can’t afford to give up. I mean if it was a swap of Wiggy for Pat Misch, then maybe.
Can Wiggy throw left-handed out of the ‘pen? Misch is the ONLY LHP not named ‘Feliciano’ on the roster…
That’s a whole other issue. That said, just because Misch is left-handed doesn’t mean he can get lefties out or that he’d work well out of the pen.
I’m not overly concerned with the Lack of a 2nd lefty. What i do get concerned about is Jerry insisting on letting Feliciano pitch to Righties. He only faced 18.1 innings worth of right handed batters, they hit .268 with 3 HR. He can’t get out a Right Handed batter.
Looking at his splits from last year, Lefties KILLED Misch same with Nelson Figeroura.
Joe Beimel is still out there and against lefties he’s been very good over the past 4 years. 2006(26 innings) holding them to a .234 BAA and a 1.04 whip, 2007 (29 innings) holding them to a .188 BAA and a .89 WHIP, 2008 he wasn’t very effective (22 innings) .278 BAA and 1.32 whip but he bounced back last year in 26 innings .258 BAA and 1.12 WHIP
I agree.. Maybe because the Mets had no other lefties.. he tried to keep him in there longer? It did seem like he was beat up by righties.
If there is an injury or otherwise — ( a trade?!!) that might open the roster a bit, getting him on waivers would be a great idea. I can see him being moved right before opening day to a team that needs some depth — did I say depth??? Ouch, I know that the Met FO doesn’t use that word too much.
The Mets have pretty solid depth for their fielders. Where they don’t have depth is in the Bullpen and Starting rotation. Their bench actually isn’t that bad right now. They did do a pretty good job there.
Yep, time is flying by and Wright, Reyes and Santana aren’t getting any younger. Meanwhile Prince Jeffy is twiddling his thumbs. At least he’s having fun playing with the baseball team his daddy got him.
can we trade Tatis for Wiggy, cause I would rather have Wiggy than Tatis, at least cause it would be a new old face, im for change and moving on for certain things, Tatis would have been one of them, but Tatis isnt the problem either
I would not have a issue with him on the bench but if he is starting then we got issues. He been to Pittsburgh and Houston before Baltimore he has not done much . We seen him at his best and that was ok nothing to write home about. He is just a Weak version of John Stearns.
but John the Bad Dude Stearns was a catcher. And Wiggy was a infielder.
Who dat say they’re gonna beat dem Saints? Who Dat!?
Really Matt? You think it would be a good idea to pick up Wiggy for a couple mill?
Why spend 2 mill on Cora and 2 mill on Wiggy when we could of had Hudson for the same price… Am I the only one lost here? Even more so, our bullpen could use the capital… not another freaking platoon player or player to add depth……
ADDRESS WHAT MUST BE ADDRESSED, STOP ADDRESSING THE SAME FREAKING THING OVER AND OVER
My hunch is Wiggy will *NOT* be happy sitting — for any team. He truly believes he deserves to start, and I recall reading how unhappy he was to sign on with the Orioles and then not see much playing time. He expected to start.
For those that do not remember, he was very unhappy a few years ago when he was being pushed aside for “some kid” named David Wright.
I’d set the odds of seeing Wiggy at Citi Field near zero.
Too bad. He’s scrappy. Plays with heart.
New day, new name, same comments. Every player would be great for the Mets if he’s cheap. Man, you guys really need to go to a Royals blog site. You all sound just like the small market fans.
I want to clear this up, so for 3 million you believe it would be beneficial for the Mets to have Wiggy? Even though we have Tatis, Cora, GM Jr., and a whole bench of AA and AAA players who are trying to make it this spring? I mean, I guess our lefty situation in the bullpen has been addressed
Hellooooo, the bus on Wigginton has left the station. Whats this infatuation with getting back ex players after they leave the team and end up being good elsewhere…Maybe we should ask Jeff Kent to come out of retirement and come back, or how about Melvin Mora?
Wiggy was a nice player when he was here but we do not need to bring on more guys who are clearly on the downsides of their career. Come on already people.
