News: Fernando Martinez MVP of Carribbean Series

By Matthew Cerrone on Feb 08, 2010, 7:51 am

Mets 21–year-old OF Fernando Martinez was named MVP of the Caribbean Series, during which he hit .348 in 23 at bats with a double and two home runs.

that’s awesome… i’m happy for fernando… that said, he still needs to go to Triple-A, stay healthy and play… i would love to see him challenge Angel Pagan and Gary Matthews Jr. for the job in center field… but, in the end, regardless of how well he does in St. Lucie, i think it’d best for him to keep being successful and Triple-A, keep his confidence up, and then see where he’s at mid-summer…

Speaking of minor leaguers…

To learn about the team’s top relief pitching prospects, such as Brant Rustich, read Mack’s Mets.

The 26–year-old Rustich is 7-5 in three minor-league seasons with the Mets, with a 2.77 ERA and 115 strike outs in 120 innings in 54 games.

Mack believes Rustich will begin in Double A, but has the potential for a mid-season call up.

That’ll be a nice boost to his confidence. Good job by F-Mart.

Lets go slow…he still needs a full season in triple A but this is truly a good start and a shot in the arm for him…

Yes very happy for F Mart and its good to see positive news about something having to do with the Mets, these days as we know its been far and few between. However I too think he still needs more time in the minors, just because he did well in the Caribbean World Series doesnt mean that he is ready right now at the major league level. I would rather see him play every day, stay healthy and hopefully dominate at AAA, then be on the team play sparingly, cause I bet Manuel plays Gary Matthews jr a lot, I just have this feeling, and then once Beltran comes back he will probably be sent down anyway. But either case looking good, keep up the good work F Mart

Yea I see good things in his future…I think it was way to early for fans to consider him a bust because of his major league numbers…this kid has skills and he is very young he has slot of time to develop…I think if he plays another 2 years at AAA then he should be ready..I know he is anxious and he wants to play in the majors now but I truly think he is 2 years away…he would still only be 23 years old which is younger than David wright when e made his major league debut…as long as F-mart can stay healthy then I think he will turn out to be a nice player in the future

If you have been following Fernando’s career, you’d know he has ripped tournaments like this before and this isn’t new. We still need a full season of him out of AAA to really prove once and for all if he is big league material.
