News: Mookie and Melvin join Mets

By Matthew Cerrone on Feb 08, 2010, 3:40 pm

The Mets have named Mookie Wilson as the team’s minor league outfield and base running coordinator.

Wilson had been the team’s first base coach, and managed Single-A Brooklyn in 2005.

“It’s good to be back,” said Wilson, in a team press release.

“This is where I started and I’m anxious to do whatever I can for the young kids in our system.”

The team also announced that Bob Melvin will join the organization as a professional scout.

for as much as ownership has screwed up or done completely wrong… you have to admire they efforts they’ve made to bring back some of the most popular former players and give them good roles in the organization

Are they going to bring back the whole 86 team? As much as I love that team and that mentality they had…….bring back players from other years. The Mets have had some real talented players, in other years too.

John Franco has been working with the team in the Spring in the past.

      Fonzie’s around too.

I think Franco’s tenure with the Mets has a shelf life. The way the two split was sad. It just seems that whenever an 86′er is placed on the team as a coach, the team goes out of its way to make that a point. I am sure Fonzie has done amazing things and so have some others that arent named, but come on…we gotta get past ’86. I think ’86 is becoming more of a burden then a teaching tool. Its like they are a chasing a ghost with ’86. Itll never be that way again. Make some new memories and use some of the greats from recent years. The only person I want from 86 is Ron Darling as a pitching coach. The man is a genius. Yes, I know what about Keith, keep him for special roles only.

    Moooooooooooooooooo-kiiiie!!! Welcome back =D

Theres nothing bad we can say about Mookie, I’m thrilled he’s with us.

Little fun fact, Mookie got his CDL back in ’99 and he has been driving tractor-trailers for a living during the off seasons.

Yea I hear ya. He has got such a great attitude not to mention he’s used to working with large groups, he was one of 12 brothers and sisters. He never played any little league, they didn’t have organized baseball where he lived. Instead he used to play with his whole family on their farm. 7 v 7 games whenever you wanted, imagine that.

What I always wonder with the Mets Management is they seem to be afraid to allow someone to be a franchise player/personality. I mean, look at recent times, Piazza “may” go into the HOF as a Dodger. Carter is in as an Expo. It seems that each player who has a chance to break, they leave. Then is some sort of lame attempt at rekindling a romance they bring this player back as a coach. I dont know, maybe its just a dream that the Mets, will have a Jeter. Yes I am sorry for saying that but, he has been their face for over a decade.

I don’t have a problem with them bringing back a lot of the guys from ’86. They know their business and hopefully it will rub off on the kids in this organization (I know Wally will teach the kids the right way to play the game – he has a good track record for it). The only other person I’d love to see back is Piazza but I think he’s enjoying retirement.

This is pretty awesome. The Mets don’t exactly have many achievers to call to help out, but they’ve been hella good in involving them in the organisation some way. Maybe it could inspire this years Mets if they knew they had a future career!

Gotta like Bob Melvin, he coached the D-backs to the NLCS in 07 and they didnt have much. Hopefully his eye for talent means our farm gets even better or maybe like NOYB said Jerry’s replacement.
“AAAAAAAAA What about Bob aaaaaaa huh huh good movie good movie huhuh. No but you gotta like Bob aaaaaaaaaaa”
Seriuosly this makes sense maybe mookie comes up to coach first too.

Mookie would be a great 1B coach IMO. Mookie knows what it takes to steal a base… I mean given the fact we’re building this team around “defense, pitching and speed”, wouldn’t you think Omar would be able to put 2 and 2 together? … Oh jeeze, what am I saying
