I am surprised by the high-level of near-certain doom being expressed by some Mets fans.
I understand the skepticism and the criticism, no question. I feel the same way. But, I’m sensing a whole other level of doom-and-gloom in my inbox and comments section, and I hear it on talk radio and from fans on the street… and, that I don’t get. I’m not predicting the Mets will win the World Series this season by any means, but I’m certainly not going to say they can’t.
I mean, how do I know the Phillies or Braves are not doomed to be injured like the Mets were in 2009. Or, how do I know the Mets will not make a significant, helpful mid-season trade. Or, perhaps this is the season Mike Pelfrey puts it together, in the same year Jose Reyes hits 25 triples and steals 80 bases. Again, I’m not saying all of this will happen, I’m not even sure it can happen, but I can’t say it won’t happen… at least not yet.
The thing is, baseball is such a long season, with so many twists and turns, and that’s what makes it so great: so long as there is one out remaining, anything can happen… and there are still at least 1,400 innings to be played.
I mean, had someone told me in February 2006 that, in eight months, Pirates LHP Oliver Perez would be starting Game 7 of the NLCS for the Mets, I’m not sure I would have believed them. And that’s the point, I don’t know, definitively, what the 2010 Mets will or will not accomplish.
Mets Merized Online: John Maine is Not Yet a Pitcher, he’s a Thrower
…last month, maine told me a lot of his troubles the last two years were because of injury and a lack of confidence, with both tied to one another… and so, hopefully, he’s feeling good and pumped up and is ready for action…
In a post to his blog for the New York Post, Joel Sherman says, “Carlos Beltran is furious with the Mets and how they have publicly handled his surgery.”
According to Sherman, Beltran is questioning how he was also handled last summer, and so, “The Mets probably should not expect him to prioritize the team this time around.”
…actually, i heard beltran is fine, at least in terms of his relationship with the Mets… instead, i’m hear beltran is more disappointed in his agent, than he is with the team… if there is a problem, it’s in how the Mets portrayed the situation, which lead some fans to see beltran as selfish… but, in picking through e-mails and comments, i sense that vibe has passed…

Mets Today: Mets Free Agent Evaluation
…the Kelvim Escobar and Ryota Igarashi signings could make the bullpen a total bust, or one of the best in the league… i look forward to watching this take shape…

Mets 21–year-old OF Fernando Martinez was named MVP of the Caribbean Series, during which he hit .348 in 23 at bats with a double and two home runs.
…that’s awesome… i’m happy for fernando… that said, he still needs to go to Triple-A, stay healthy and play… i would love to see him challenge Angel Pagan and Gary Matthews Jr. for the job in center field… but, in the end, regardless of how well he does in St. Lucie, i think it’d best for him to keep being successful and Triple-A, keep his confidence up, and then see where he’s at mid-summer…
Speaking of minor leaguers…
To learn about the team’s top relief pitching prospects, such as Brant Rustich, read Mack’s Mets.
The 26–year-old Rustich is 7-5 in three minor-league seasons with the Mets, with a 2.77 ERA and 115 strike outs in 120 innings in 54 games.
Mack believes Rustich will begin in Double A, but has the potential for a mid-season call up.
