Buzz: Mets close to deal with Mike Jacobs

by Matthew Cerrone on February 9th, 2010 at 9:10 pm

The Mets are close to signing free-agent 1B Mike Jacobs to a minor-league deal, according to Jerry Crasnick of ESPN.com.

The Mets traded Jacobs with RHP Yusmeiro Petit and 3B Grant Psomas to the Marlins for Carlos Delgado in 2005.

interestingly, the return of jacobs probably means delgado’s official exit

Jacobs, 29, hit just .226 with 18 HR; but he hit 32 HR with 92 RBI the season before that.

He is batting .234 with three HR in just 51 at bats as a pinch hitter.

he has an explosive bat, no question… he hits right-handed pitching well, but struggles against lefties, just like Daniel Murphy… he’s also fairly slow on the bases and plays just an OK first base… to his credit, he has been fairly healthy during his career, which, of course, at this point for the Mets, is a positive… he’s a tough player, though, very intense, and could make for a good power bat for the bench and a great guy to have in the clubhouse… in the end, i’m thinking he had very few options, and a trip to Triple-A could be in the making…

By the way, Petit was designated for assignment by the D-Backs last week; while Psomas, 27, in seven years in the minor leagues, has yet to be promoted to the big leagues.

Note: Keith Hernandez talking about Daniel Murphy

by Matthew Cerrone on February 9th, 2010 at 5:32 pm

In a conference call with reporters today, Keith Hernandez said Omar Minaya called him last week to, as he put it, ‘Get this whole ball rolling,’ so he could work with Daniel Muprhy on his defense at first base.

He said he and Murphy also worked together yesterday, and he’s more than happy to work with him again at various points during Spring Training, though he doubts there will be time to connect during the regular season.

Murphy said they worked on his footwork around the bag, and talked a lot about in-game situations.

Hernandez said he only worked with Murphy on fielding, saying hitting is Howard Johnson’s responsibility.  He said he also worked with Todd Zeile before, as well as John Olerud, ‘who, obviously, didn’t need any help at all.’

Murphy said, in time, he believes he can be an asset to the Mets at first base.

Hernandez also worked with Nick Evans, who, he said, ‘Does a good job around the base.’

In the end, Hernandez feels Muprhy did an admirable job last season, being asked to learn first base, mid season, in New York, and he is surprised at how well he handled the transition.

by Matthew Cerrone on February 9th, 2010 at 4:00 pm

Here is video of Keith Hernandez working with Daniel Murphy and Nick Evans in St. Lucie today:

this is fascinating to me… keith is mic’d in the video, so you get to hear his instruction, and his offer to help more in the future… this is great to see frankly, i’d like to just see keith playing the position, talking about how he played, etc., i think that would be interesting in and of itself

News: Mets pick up Jason Pridie

by Matthew Cerrone on February 9th, 2010 at 3:16 pm

The Mets claimed OF Jason Pridie off waivers from the Twins, according to Minnesota reporter Kelly Thesier of MLB.com.

The 26–year-old Pridie, who hits left-handed, is a career .276 hitter in 885 games in the minor leagues, with a .319 OBP, during which he has played all three outfield positions and two games at third base.

In late 2007, Aaron Gleeman wrote the following:

“He’s still young, has enough speed to play center field, and has occasionally shown the ability to hit, but Pridie’s plate discipline is sub par and his power is modest.”

Last week, in a post to TwinkieTown, Jason projected Pridie to be on the Twins opening day roster, acting as a back-up outfielder to Denard Span.

Ted Berg on Mets Successful Off-Season

by Matthew Cerrone on February 9th, 2010 at 2:04 pm

i agree with ted, despite what Mike Francesa is trying to push on WFAN today, the Mets had a successful off season, in the sense that they did not do anything stupid… they did not give out a terrible, long-term contract to an overrated player, and they kept their minor-league system in tact… both of which will prove vital, should the team decide to make major, significant changes this summer or next off season

Updated at 2:45 pm:

…for what it’s worth, yes, i would liked to have seen the team do more… but, to me, given the talent they have in house, it was always more important they not do anything stupid… which is why i advocated them spending on role players, on one-year deals, like a Rob Barajas, Mark DeRosa and Orlando Hudson or Felipe Lopez… the Mets problem the last few years had not been a lack of star power, it was a lack of depth… and so, to me, the better approach would have been to create depth, while also keeping the farm system (and future budget) in tact

Pignataro wonders should Mets draft Bryce Harper

by Matthew Cerrone on February 9th, 2010 at 12:37 pm

…i like the idea of having a talent like Bryce Harper in the Mets system, but, and this is the wrong way to look at things, i am so leery because of all the hype surrounding him… regardless, i still think it’s smart to always draft pitching with top picks
