Buzz: Mets close to deal with Mike Jacobs

by Matthew Cerrone on February 9th, 2010 at 9:10 pm

The Mets are close to signing free-agent 1B Mike Jacobs to a minor-league deal, according to Jerry Crasnick of ESPN.com.

The Mets traded Jacobs with RHP Yusmeiro Petit and 3B Grant Psomas to the Marlins for Carlos Delgado in 2005.

interestingly, the return of jacobs probably means delgado’s official exit

Jacobs, 29, hit just .226 with 18 HR; but he hit 32 HR with 92 RBI the season before that.

He is batting .234 with three HR in just 51 at bats as a pinch hitter.

he has an explosive bat, no question… he hits right-handed pitching well, but struggles against lefties, just like Daniel Murphy… he’s also fairly slow on the bases and plays just an OK first base… to his credit, he has been fairly healthy during his career, which, of course, at this point for the Mets, is a positive… he’s a tough player, though, very intense, and could make for a good power bat for the bench and a great guy to have in the clubhouse… in the end, i’m thinking he had very few options, and a trip to Triple-A could be in the making…

By the way, Petit was designated for assignment by the D-Backs last week; while Psomas, 27, in seven years in the minor leagues, has yet to be promoted to the big leagues.
