The Mets claimed OF Jason Pridie off waivers from the Twins, according to Minnesota reporter Kelly Thesier of MLB.com.
The 26–year-old Pridie, who hits left-handed, is a career .276 hitter in 885 games in the minor leagues, with a .319 OBP, during which he has played all three outfield positions and two games at third base.
In late 2007, Aaron Gleeman wrote the following:
“He’s still young, has enough speed to play center field, and has occasionally shown the ability to hit, but Pridie’s plate discipline is sub par and his power is modest.”
Last week, in a post to TwinkieTown, Jason projected Pridie to be on the Twins opening day roster, acting as a back-up outfielder to Denard Span.

Sure, why not?
Will this lead up to a trade of some kind???
Does it ever?
he plays CF, is pagan getting traded for a pitcher??
Ha, no. Its called minor league depth.
Jason Pridie was released to make room for Orlando Hudson.
I’d rather have Pridie.
ehh….so-so on that statement. What Priddie’s ceiling??
Diff between his ceiling and GMJ is greater than diff between Hudson and Castillo.
who knows.
why not, he can help triple A. the major league team is not the only one that needs help
Umm…he’ll have to play LF. Cause F-Mart has that locked up, plus i think Davis may get some PT at RF . ESPECIALLY if Murphy performs REALLY well.
yea i know, but even for the bench
My guess is that he is the CF. He has better range than Martinez.
Ill also take there team, GM, and coach, No? BAH!!
Trade for a pitcher please in spanish, Por favor cambio por un lanzador, Minaya la estas cag…
let me help you, por favor has un cambio por un lanzador, minaya la estas cagando coño!
jason pridie = brett gardner?
Why not? It’s not like the Mets have a wealth of CF prospects in camp right……..
hmmmm…..by Omar’s calculations….No
Apparently, he is an excellent defender. At least he fits the outlined plan of speed and defense.
I love it. Great move. He was burried in the depth chart by all those other outstanding OF on the Twins. He was a high prospect two years ago, but Span and other other passed him. The Bisons are going to be sick. My guess is that He plays CF while Fernadito plays a corner spot.
ho hum….yawn. wake me up when we trade for a starting pitcher.
There really isn’t much not to like about this move. Pridie was often rated the top defensive player in the Rays organization. He slumped in AA, but then when he got up to AAA he excelled. He’s got speed and some power, and plays strong defense. The Rays saw fit to protect him even after struggling in AA so obviously they had a good gauge on what the situation was. Then the Twins made sure to get him in the Garza trade. I’m just a bit surprised they let him go, because its not like his numbers were bad and he was projected to make it to the big league club.
I look forward to seeing what he’s got in AAA. What are the rules when it comes to claiming a guy off waivers like this. Can we outright him directly to the minors? What about comp?
I don’t know much about his defence; but his last two seasons at the Twins AAA he posted OPS of .740 and .677. The only time he had a decent batting line was three years ago with the Rays AAA team. Outside of that it has not been pretty. Given 08 and 09 the time at the Rays AAA would fall under the “fluke” category. I can’t see where “its not like his numbers were bad”; they are pretty bad; especially after 3 years at AAA.
Well I disagree. A .270 AVG with 21 2Bs, 16 3Bs!, 13 HRs and 25 stolen bases in 138 games to go along with a big league call-up isn’t bad. The only knock was he struck out too many times. C’mon Sylow, you’re a smart guy so you know OBP is not the only measure of ability.
In the 2008 issue of Baseball America, Jason Pridie was the Twins 7th best prospect. He was also rated as the Twins best defensive outfielder, ahead of Aaron Hicks who is their best prospect.
I’d agree that 2009 was not good, but thats precisely why we have a chance to get a guy like this. Lets hope it was 2009 that was the fluke, and not 2007 as you say.
677 OPS at age 25 at AAA isn’t that good, ditto the 2008 OPS. I agree it is not the only measure; but they’re both pretty low. They’re driven by what appears to be his insistence to never take a walk. He does strike out. Neither appears to be correcting. I’ll take your word on his defense and he does appear to have some speed.
My concern with his 2007 AAA stat line is that it is far from the others. You have, beginning in 2003, OPSs of: 693, 797, 675, 585, 772 (2007 AA), 740, and 677. The 914 at 2007 AAA is the outlier. He does like his triples though.
Contrary to what I assume is popular opinion I wish him well. He does offer some things that GMjr doesn’t: speed and defense. I’d prefer Pridie over GMj if GMj flat out reeks in ST. I’m not sure about the others competing, but this guy does bring some useful skills (PH, PR, D)
BTW, thanks.
Two things in life are certain these days:
1.The Mets will be crapped on publicly by all media outlets because it is so the “in” thing right now.
2. Any post by Sylow will contain both “bad” and “OPS”.
Really, just relax and put the calculator away. It would be much less stressful. I think it’s a solid pickup for the minors and provides…..what’s that word…..oh yeah, depth.
LOL; I had it surgically attached.
see my response to David
He would have to pass through waivers first to be outrighted to the minors. But they don’t need to do that anytime soon as he seems to have another option year left, they don’t seem to be in a hurry to sign more big league players, and he might just make the team if some unforeseen things happen.
Yeah, very decent player. I have seen him quite a few times in AAA Rochester. Covers a lot of ground in CF due to his speed. Good at plate, hits a few HR, but a bit of a free swinger.
Who?
Pridie, Fogg and Dickey
Taking care of all your legal needs
Spring training is gonna be PACKED
useless nugget of info…
When the Rays added Pridie to their 40 man roster in November of 2007 they put Brian Stokes on waivers allowing Omar to claim him.
I don’t think you can really hate this move, especially after last season. Yeah the starting rotation doesn’t have any depth at all, in fact they really don’t even have a 5th starter. But Omar is really adding some depth to the position players which is nice to see.
Its at the expense of a starting pitcher, but one that probably cannot help at the big league level in 2010 if ever. So its a good depth move.
