Ted Berg on Mets Successful Off-Season

i agree with ted, despite what Mike Francesa is trying to push on WFAN today, the Mets had a successful off season, in the sense that they did not do anything stupid… they did not give out a terrible, long-term contract to an overrated player, and they kept their minor-league system in tact… both of which will prove vital, should the team decide to make major, significant changes this summer or next off season

…for what it’s worth, yes, i would liked to have seen the team do more… but, to me, given the talent they have in house, it was always more important they not do anything stupid… which is why i advocated them spending on role players, on one-year deals, like a Rob Barajas, Mark DeRosa and Orlando Hudson or Felipe Lopez… the Mets problem the last few years had not been a lack of star power, it was a lack of depth… and so, to me, the better approach would have been to create depth, while also keeping the farm system (and future budget) in tact
