Video: Keith and Murphy in PSL Today

By Matthew Cerrone on Feb 09, 2010, 4:00 pm

Here is video of Keith Hernandez working with Daniel Murphy and Nick Evans in St. Lucie today:

this is fascinating to me… keith is mic’d in the video, so you get to hear his instruction, and his offer to help more in the future… this is great to see frankly, i’d like to just see keith playing the position, talking about how he played, etc., i think that would be interesting in and of itself

Wow, this is great! To hear Keith get back in the saddle and describe his approach to first base like this is very precious. Thanks!

This will give Keith so much to talk about during games–look forward to hearing all about it, and got the DVR set for Daily News Live at 5. Also love how he’s wearing his SNY shirt.

I really wanted Keith to say “Benjie Molina” instead of “truckhorse” then

He watches 100 games and year and won 11 gold gloves. He is bound to be one of the best teachers around. Hence why I like Darling so much, as formernplayers they get to amass all this knowledge up in that booth, watching and critiquing. Keith has been very vocal in the broadcasts about why they didnt call him. Well he got the call and its about damn time. He basically gave these three guys the biggest gift of their professional career.

Seriously, whats not to love about Keith?

I agree. I like to see him spend more than 10 days working with Murphy. The Mets should pay him whatever he want to work with him more often.

This should be a no- brainer for the Mets right? Do what ever it takes to convince Keith to work with Murphy all spring. Not just 10 days!

I’d really like to see Keith in a more active role with the organization…he and Backman would be great to have as a manager/bench coach duo.

Keith has already stated numerous times that he has no interest in ever managing or coaching because he likes he relaxed lifestylfe. Gary posed the question to him last year during one of the Mets blowouts and Keith basically was like, no, because he loves his job as commentator and he doens’t have the desire to invest the time year-round.

He even said in the video he doesn’t live on the field anymore like he used to.

who do i gotta kill to be the “second baseman”?? no need to risk a minor leaguer, coach, or staffer’s health receiving those throws at second… i’ll gladly do it!

Love It!!!!!! I’m rooting for D Murph. He seems to be humble and willing to learn as much as possible. Hopefully some of that fire Keith brings is something they can all take from this.

    Lets Go Mets!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This makes me way more confident in Murph at first. Seeing that he needs to learn how to play first properly, Kieth is the man to teach you. I guess you could say Keith is the man in general! hehe

    @Kjclinks
Agreed, he is one of the best fielders of all time. Hands down. Solid hitter, but as Ozzie Smith is in the Hall and had his number retired by the Cards, why shouldn’t Keith have the same privilege from the Mets, Cards, and the Hall?

I don’t think its going too far to call Keith Hernandez a living legend. Forget the Mets Hall of Fame, he should be in Cooperstown!! To hear that it took this long to have the Mets call him to help out players on the field is par for the course. Maybe we can get Matt Cerrone tutored by Keith and Ron when he is down there this Spring.

This is great for so many reasons, one of them being that you always wonder what these guys that come into coach the players say. It is great to hear the kind of stuff they talk about instead of watching a video with no sound and wondering what they are discussing. That being said it is great to Keith get involved with the Mets more. Who cares how long it took them to call him, he is here now and I’d love to see him get even more involved. I’m also very excited to see how Murphy works out at first, I think he was very good defensively but experience and coaching like this will make him even better.

haha that was fun to watch.

Did anybody notice that Keith didn’t offer to give his number to Murph? instead he said “have Jay call me”. I thought that was funny, and maybe a bit insincere of keith.

Keith being Keith. In the grand sceme of things its no big deal he didn’t give his number. I’ll bet that he is not getting paid for working with them. I don’t blame him for not giving them his number.

There is also the possibility that Keith and Murphy have spoken to each other when the camera was not filming them.

I just can’t believe that he is already asking Murphy to help him move some furniture!! How long have they known each other!

I noticed the exact same thing. He didn’t give his number. Makes a big difference. The message was clear. They have to go through the team to get him, which means dollars for him. Makes sense I guess.

That or Keith realized that Murphy is such a workaholic that he would be calling him every 5 minutes asking questions. I’m sure Keith likes his privacy. I don’t blame him for not giving his number, whatever his reasons and I don’t find it insincere of him either. I think him taking the time to come up and probably not get paid is a great gesture by one of the greatest defensive first basemen. If you go to a gym you think a trainer is going to work with you all the time for free. It’s the same deal with Keith.

Keith is the Best 1st baseman in the history of the Mets. He deserves to be in the Hall and get the respect he deserves.

By Keith teaching Murphy, he will improve his skills. Murphy’s defense last year proved to be decent, but I am very concerned about his offense as he looked tired last year.

I would love to see a Keith highlight show on MLB network where they just show Keith’s defensive highlights and he narrates through them – talking about what is happening in his head and how he is deciding what to do.

I think it is awesome that Keith is willing to work with Murphy before spring training has even started. I thought that Murphy was a solid 1st baseman last year and now he will be even better this year.
