…i was sitting in the back row, behind home, in mezz, for Game 4 of the 2000 NLDS, and i will never forget fearing for my life that the stadium was going to come down from fans going crazy, jumping, celebtrrating, following Barry Bonds line drive to center…
The Arizona Winter League announced today 22–year-old free-agent SS Rylan Sandoval has signed a minor-league contract with the Mets.
Sandoval had been playing in the Arizona Winter League, where he was hitting .368 and leading his team in runs scored.
To hear from his manager, go here.
Sandoval was drafted by the Mets 2007, he chose to accept a scholarship to Long Beach State.
Yesterday, Jon Heyman of SI.com said the Mets signed free-agent 1B Mike Jacobs to a $900,000 minor-league deal, though he can earn another $1.15 million through incentives.
This means, in addition to Daniel Murphy, the Mets will have Jacobs and Fernando Tatis, as well as Ike Davis and Chris Carter, all competing for the job at first base.
So, this week’s MetsBlog poll, presented by McFadden’s, which will soon be opening a new bar in Citi Field, accessible from the street and from inside the ballpark, is as follows:

…i don’t think we’re spoiled… i think we’re confused, which dom touches on in his post… i think Mets fans realize Ownership spends money… we just don’t understand – and more or less disagree with – how and why they spend it like they do… it’s not the dollars that have us pessimistic, it’s the decisions and the absence of any sort of direction or plan…

In a must-read, outstanding report in the Daily News, John Harper writes about his experience catching Johan Santana at Florida Gulf Coast University this week.
Harper writes, among other insights, “After all, when Santana agreed to let me do this, I expected to be wowed by his vaunted changeup, and indeed, you can’t appreciate how much it looks at first like his fastball, or how late it dives or darts away at 78 mph, until you see it from this up-close vantage point.”
According to Harper, Santana had to adjust his delivery last season because of the bone spurs in his elbow.
However, “The fact that he can do it effortlessly again, post-surgery, delights him to no end.”
…it delights me too, johan… it was obvious he was uncomfortable last season, he rarely looked right… and i can’t wait to watch him work again… much like with Jose Reyes, wins and losses aside, i missed simply watching him perform…
“I know this team is looking for me to lead the way, and I’m up to the challenge,” Santana told Harper. “That’s why they brought me here. We all know what happened last year… I really believe the pieces are in place, that you are going to see guys like Ollie and Pelfrey and Maine pitch at a high level this season… I believe we’ll have a great year.”
Santana also talks with Harper about leadership and his thoughts on the Phillies.
Flood explains, “Mike Jacobs is a designated hitter – not even a very good one – and the Mets are an NL team. This is in no way a fit… Jacobs and Luis Castillo on the right side of the infield would be a nightmare for Mike Pelfrey and the Mets.”
…i’m guess this is why the Mets hired him to be a roving base-running instructor … perhaps he should also be working with Jose Reyes, and everyone else for that matter, in big league camp…
According to George King of the New York Post, free-agent OF Gary Sheffield said the Mets have not contacted him this off season, though he’s in ‘tip-top shape.’
He hit .276 with a .372 OBP, 10 HR, 43 RBI and two stolen bases in 100 games for the Mets last season.
…he really wasn’t that bad, all things considered… but, he has no place on the 2010 team, and i’m glad to hear the Mets agree… i wish him the best of luck, though…
Sheffield says he has ‘things on the table,’ and is weighing his options.
…the word in baseball is that he, and other out-of-work DHs, could end up killing time in an Independent League, keeping in shape and showing they can still play, while waiting for work… i’m sure that will go over real well with sheff…
