Last night on Twitter, Adam Rubin of the Daily News answered a series of questions from fans about the Mets, their minor league system, spending, the Front Office and expectations for 2010, among other things.
In talking about the Opening Day roster, Rubin said Fernando Nieve, Jon Niese, Hisanori Takahashi, Josh Fogg, Nelson Figueroa and Pat Misch will all compete to be the team’s fifth starter.
Rubin sees the back-up catcher, as well as either Gary Matthews Jr. or Angel Pagan, plus Alex Cora and Fernando Tatis as a lock to be on the team’s bench, with Chris Carter, Frank Catalanatto, Jason Pridie and Mike Jacobs competing for the final bench spot.
…it’s weird, rubin hasn’t been very active on Twitter… then, all of sudden, boom, last night he made like 40 updates, all super informative… great stuff, adam… by the way, i get the feeling rubin knows more about the Mets than some people who work there… the guy’s incredible… i know people like to joke about it, because of the incident last summer, but i do get the feeling he’d make a strong GM… i mean, he graduated from Wharton Business School, he understands every level of the game, obviously he knows how to deal with the media, and he already wears a suit to the ballpark…

Speaking of Rubin, he did a Q&A with Matt Pignataro from Seven Train to Shea, in which the two talk mostly about the Triple-A Bison and Mike Jacobs.
…it is a shame, i mean, he did pitch well while with the Mets… i always saw him as a Brave, in a Mets uniform, i just couldn’t help it, and i respect and admire glavine, but it’s just so hard to separate him from Atlanta… and so, when he got rocked that last game, then made his comment about not being devastated, even though i know what he meant, and know no one game should define a career, i, too, couldn’t help feeling frustrated with him…
This morning on WFAN, host Craig Carton spoke to Mets OF Carlos Beltran, who said he’s doing great.
Beltran said he is ahead of schedule, while rehabbing in Puerto Rico.
According to the New York Post, “Beltran will head to spring training when position players report, even though the star center fielder will not be physically ready and is under no obligation to report that early.”
In this report for the New York Post, Joel Sherman explains why the Mets should look to Alex Rodriguez, for a lesson in how to quickly revamp their image.
…right now, the Mets strategy is simple: hold their breath and pray for wins… it’s a gamble… yes, if the Mets are, say, 18–5 on May 1, or even 30–22 a month later, things will feel a lot different around Citi Field than they do right now… however, if they lose, they’re going to lose more than games…
…the thing is, even if they do win, and every one is happy this summer, and hopefully even happier in October, hope is not a long-term strategy… win or lose, the Mets still have a lot of work to do, be it with how they conduct business, connect with fans or present themselves through the media… and, none of these things should be ignored, regardless of their record…

In a post to his blog for the Star-Ledger, beat writer Brian Costa takes a closer look at the Mets starting rotation, saying, “In all likelihood, the Mets’ season will be largely dictated by what they get out of Mike Pelfrey, Oliver Perez and John Maine.”
…i totally agree… despite all of the talk about power hitters, catchers, the return of Jose Reyes, etc., in some ways, 2010 was always going to be about how these three pitchers perform…
Last week, in a poll on MetsBlog.com, 57 percent of voters said they are most confident in Pelfrey entering this season, while 32 percent said Maine and just 11 percent said Perez.
According to Costa, Bill James projects Maine, Perez and Pelfrey will combine to win 26 games.
CHONE projects them to win only a combined 22 games.
…ok, so, add that to, say, another 16 wins from santana, and, by my estimate, the Mets will need to get at least 15 wins from their fifth starter spot… yes, 15… i’ll give you a minute to let that sink in… in other words, at least two of maine, pelfrey and perez need to step up, be better than that, and deliver top performances, while combining for between 25 and 30 wins… i don’t know which of the two it will be, but it better be someone… unless, of course, Omar Minaya intends to trade for a top-line starting pitcher this summer…
Speaking of the fifth starter, in a post to Amazin Avenue, Sam Page does a statistical comparison of Nelson Figueroa and Jon Niese, while considering each player’s contract situation.
