McFadden’s Poll: David Wright’s Expectations

by Matthew Cerrone on February 18th, 2010 at 9:04 am

NEWcitifield2Yesterday, David Wright told reporters, “We feel like we’re going to go out there and win the National League East and go deep in the playoffs and win the World Series,” adding:

“There’s no question that the Phillies are a great team.  They have, I think, arguably one of the best offenses in baseball, they’ve upgraded their starting pitching, and they play like winners.  They play like they expect to win.  So no one ever said it’s going to be easy, but we have to find a way to de-throne those guys… and it’s not just the Phillies.  I think the Braves have made some good additions.  I think the Nationals have had a tremendous offseason with some of the signings they’ve had.  And then you’ve got the Marlins, who go out there and play that loose, dangerous style of baseball.  I think we’re in one of the best divisions in baseball, but I don’t think, by any means, should anybody be counting us out before spring training starts.”

So, this week’s MetsBlog poll, presented by McFadden’s, which will soon be opening a new bar in Citi Field, is:

Buzz: Barajas likely to Accept Mets Offer

by Matthew Cerrone on February 18th, 2010 at 8:34 am

Jon Heyman of SI.com says free-agent C Rod Barajas is likely to accept a one-year, roughly $1 million minor-league offer from the Mets.

…last week, or the week before, i said the Mets were still interested in barajas, which i was glad to hear… he’s not great, but, like i had been saying since October, i would much, much rather have barajas, for one year and at minimal cost, than have Bengie Molina making $12 million for two years… i am not concerned with offense at catcher… however, i’m thrilled to know the Mets might end up having the best defensive catching duo in baseball, in barajas and Henry Blanco, while Josh Thole is allowed to get more work in Triple-A…

for my take on barajas’s talent, and his role on the Mets, go here

Original Post at 8:21 am:

Yesterday, Ken Rosenthal of FoxSports.com, said, “The Mets are making a hard push for Barajas,” while negotiating with him on a one-year deal.

Today, in the Daily News, Adam Rubin quotes a team official who says the Mets are only interested in Barajas on a minor-league deal.

Meanwhile, Jeff Wilson of the Star-Telegram believes the Rangers offered minor-league deals to both Barajas and free-agent C Jose Molina, ‘but each declined.’

sure… but only if David Wright can use a magic wand at the plate, and only if Jose Reyes can ride a unicorn around the bases… by the way, Gil Hodges wore No. 14, when winning the team’s first ring, and Davey Johnson wore No. 5, when winning the team’s secondthe Mets need to play Smart Baseball, not deal in superstition
