In addition, to see a short video of Jose Reyes taking ground balls earlier today, play the video below.
…i have to say, i was encouraged when i saw him run a couple of weeks ago on SNY, but seeing this today, was awesome…there was no hesitation from him whatsoever, and he had full mobility moving from left to right, as well as when he charged forward…
According to SNY producer Matt Dunn, Francisco Rodriguez talked to reporters today and said he is 100 percent healthy. He acknowledged that he struggled a bit in the second half last season due to to inactivity, “but that’s in the past and this is a new year.”
Jerry Manuel said if he bats Jose Reyes third it would be partially precautionary, so Reyes doesn’t go out and try to do ‘everything’ right away, like he would do as a leadoff hitter.
Reyes later said, if it was up to him, he would bat himself leadoff, but he’ll do whatever he is asked to do.
Kelvim Escobar played light catch, thus gripping a baseball.
Johan Santana threw a bullpen session, along with Mike Pelfrey, Oliver Perez, John Maine, Pedro Feliciano, and others.
In a report for the Daily News, Adam Rubin says, according to the player’s agent, free-agent 1B Carlos Delgado underwent a second hip surgery, which has a four-month recovery time.
…i never thought delgado would be back, once Mike Jacobs was signed, but this obviously, officially closes the door on his time with the Mets…
Jerry Manuel talked to reporters today in Tradition Field, and explained that he needs to be careful with hoe he uses Jose Reyes in the lineup this spring, noting:
“We need reyes for 155 games. This gives opportunity for him to ease into role. If he does what I think he can it will be big.”
Manuel plans to closely watch Oliver Perez, Mike Pelfrey and John Maine, as well as other players there are questions about, while being involved ‘with their process.’
In regards to Perez, Maine and Pelfrey, he said, “I was very impressed with them today. Ollie, this the best I’ve seen him,” which he credits, in part, to the influence of Johan Santana.
“I think Ollie’s arm is in the best shape, in February, that its ever been,” he said. “I don’t think his mechanics have ever been this sound.”
Lastly, Manuel sees Hasinori Takahashi as more of a starting pitcher, though he can be a reliever.
Fred Wilpon addressed the media this morning at Tradition Field.
He said the offseason was “torture,” as he eagerly awaited the start of Spring Training.
He optimistic about the team and said they do not have financial concerns.
Also, he believes they have the best medical staff in sports.
Lastly, when asked if people’s jobs were at stake he said that he’s optimistic the team will do well, but he essentially didn’t answer the question.
Jay Marshall, who was claimed by the Mets from the A’s on Jan. 8, has a pre-existing shoulder injury.
The commissioners office is looking in to whether the Mets can void the contract.
He has yet to report to camp.
Today is the Mets first official workout for pitchers and catchers.

According to Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports, free-agent C Rod Barajas is weighing a one year, $1 million offer from the Mets, and a one year, $1.5 million offer from the Rangers.
Rosenthal says the Mets upgraded their offer from a minor-league contract to a guaranteed major-league deal.
Yesterday, Marty Noble from MLB.com said the Mets had not heard back from Barajas’ agent on their offer, but on Thursday, Jon Heyman of SI.com said Barajas was likely to accept the one year offer from the Mets.
…it makes sense for Barajas to accept the offer from the Mets, because he would basically be a lock for the starting job…the Rangers already have Jarrod Saltalamacchia, Taylor Teagarden, and Max Ramirez on their active roster, so there would be more of a competition for him there…of course, their offer is higher, and i would rather not see the Mets pay too much more for a guy like Barajas…he does add value with his defense behind the plate, but aside from a bit of pop, doesn’t provide much at the plate…

“We need reyes for 155 games. This gives opportunity for him to ease into role. If he does what I think he can it will be big.”
