…wow…i strained a muscle just reading about David’s routine…i didn’t get to see him this past weekend, but he is supposedly in very good shape coming into spring training…i’m looking forward to seeing him on the field on saturday…
Jon Heyman of SI.com says Jerry Manuel is not kidding, and Jose Reyes will be battig third until Carlos Beltran returns from the disabled list.
…I just don’t think this idea maximizes Reyes’ usefulness, and considering the guy hasn’t played since last May, I just think Manuel should slot him in the familar leadoff spot, get him going and comfortable, and then consider making the lineup change…
At the request of MetsBlog readers, I have created desktop wallpaper images from the first workout for Pitchers and Catchers from this past Saturday.
To get those images, and more, click here.
In a post to Twitter, Steve Popper of the Bergen Record says Hall of Famer Sandy Koufax is watching Oliver Perez‘s bullpen session right now at Tradition Field.
Brian Costa of the Star Ledger took a picture, which you can see here.
I’m leaving New York for Port St. Lucie this morning, where I will be at Mets spring training through March 6.
Starting tomorrow morning, I’m going to try something new here on MetsBlog.com, essentially live-blogging, and lifestreaming, my experience in camp and around town – and so you’ll see smaller, quicker posts, making in-the-moment observations about the team, camp and town, including links to photos and video I will be taking with my camera phone.
In addition, I have the ability to stream live video to the blog, with just a three-second delay. I’m hoping to use this for the occasional live batting practice, bullpen session and simulated game… so, keep an eye the blog, as I will likely give a 15–minute heads up before a video goes live.
As usual, I will have my Nikon D40, with which I will take higher-quality photographs – I will also be filming interviews, daily diaries, and other video content for SNY.TV – all of which I will post at the end of the day.
Lastly, all of this content is sortable and able to viewed using the tabs at the top of this page.
And with that… I’m off to Florida… Let’s Go METS.
According to Kevin Kernan of the New York Post, Omar Minaya believes 20 year old prospect Jenrry Mejia could pitch in the Major Leagues right now.
However, despite Jerry Manuel saying Mejia could find himself in the Mets bullpen as their eighth inning guy, Minaya says the plan is for him to be a starter, and the more likely spot for him, at least to start the year, is Double-A Binghamton.
…i had the opportunity to watch Mejia this weekend, and i was equally as excited to watch this kid throw and to see the electricity of his stuff, and the excitement and enthusiasm he has brought to camp this year…
According to Kernan, Minaya says Mejia throws a 97 mph fastball, a changeup, slider and curve, but needs to better command those pitches, but scouts say Mejia reminds them of young Tigers starter Rick Porcello.
…i think the key with a talent like this is patience, and allowing him to develop and mature in the minors…it’s not to say he won’t get a cup of coffee with the big league club this year, but he is only 20, and despite some early success, i believe the best course of action is to get him consistent starts in the minors, rather than shipping him back and forth to the minors…
For more on Mejia, check out the New York Post here.
…the cover of Eric’s book is a photo i took of Jose Reyes at Tradition Field two years ago…there are a bunch of other pictures i’ve taken in this book as well…Eric and his designer, Brad Lappin were a lot of fun to work with and i’m looking forward to getting my hands on a copy of this book…
