by Michael Baron on February 23rd, 2010 at 2:47 pm

It was a busy morning once again at Tradition Field, as more position players arrived at camp, and workouts continued on the back fields. Here is a quick rundown of the morning’s events:

  • Jason Bay arrived and held court with reporters, and according to SNY producer Matt Dunn, he’s comfortable with the transition from Boston to New York, and Kevin Burkhardt from SNY says the first thing he did on the field today was sign autographs for fans.
  • According to Steve Popper of the Bergen Record, Luis Castillo has arrived, and feels he has something to prove, again.
  • Both Jon Niese and Jenrry Mejia threw live batting practice for the first time this Spring.
  • Jose Reyes did some running inside Tradition Field today, according to David Lennon of Newsday.
  • Finally, Kelvim Escobar is taking things slow, according to Mike Puma of the New York Post.

What the Lineups Could Look Like with Reyes 3rd

by Michael Baron on February 23rd, 2010 at 1:15 pm

…i’m really not a fan of this idea, and i’m hoping, if he does end up batting third to start the season, it’s a temporary thing…

The position players, like Luis Castillo, Jeff Francoeur and Angel Pagan, keep shaking hands with Ike Davis, introducing themselves on field before stretching.

He seems quite popular, and they clearly know who he is.

Jenrry Mejia is working out as a reliever, throwing live same live batting practice session as other relievers, rotating in two and three times, only throwing 15- to 20-pitches at a time.

He has a strong arm, no question.  There is a good amount of difference between his fastball and off-speed pitch.  He’s a bit wild, though, which is what the scouting reports always say.  But, he looks to have serious talent.

Read: Jason Bay Addresses Media in PSL

by Michael Baron on February 23rd, 2010 at 11:20 am

According to SNY producer Matt Dunn, Jason Bay talked to reporters today at Tradition Field and said:

“It’s always a little bit different. I was traded four times now, and free agency. I’ve walked into new clubhouse before. Actually, this isn’t new to me. I spent a few lovely months here with the St. Lucie Mets. I still don’t remember anything. It was so long ago. I walked in and had to ask everybody out front where I was supposed to go. Like anything, it’s a little different. But once you put the uniform on, the baseball portion in a day or two is normal again.”

Asked about being prepared for New York, coming from Boston, Bay said:

“I think it’s huge. I think if I would have come straight from Pittsburgh, like I came from Pittsburgh to Boston, there was a little bit of not a grace period, but understanding of getting used to how everything works. Now I feel like I’m comfortable. That’s one less unknown going on.”

Asked about the health issues that were raised about him this winter, Bay said:

“There are some differing opinions once again. I think the proof is in the pudding. You just go out there and play. Those are the things that everybody says you set goals for yourself. I don’t set numerical goals, but every year I set out to play in as many games as I can, because I feel if I do that the numbers will be there.”

Jon Niese is looking good throwing live batting practice.

I asked if he’s ‘free & easy,’ he said, ‘Yes, and down the road I go.’

I don’t know what that means, either.

By the way, this is not Matt Holliday.
