Video: Ryota Igarashi Live BP Session

By Matthew Cerrone on Feb 24, 2010, 12:34 pm

Here is video of Ryota Igarashi first throwing live batting practice, followed by a quick chat with his catcher, Josh Thole, and his translator, during which they talked about what pitches he threw, what pitches he’d like to throw more of, and how to communicate on a pitch out, as well as a wild pitch:

    Matt-
You & Michael are doing a great job this Spring of keeping us fans as up to date as possible with the information coming out of PSL, pictures, and videos.

      Seriously.

I love reading this stuff during my free time at work. Makes me think we’re already in baseball season.

Good stuff. I’m starting to get that feeling again. No…not the pit in the stomach….the OTHER feeling.

Yeah I agree these videos are great, it makes me really want to be there. As for Igarashi even if he is not the 8th inning guy it is nice to know we may have another solid arm in the bullpen. A lot of focus was on the Mets not trading Castillo and upgrading on defense as well as a starting pitcher but the bullpen did not seem as much of a focus. I think it has the potential to be a good pen but we are going to be relying on a lot of young guys so it should be interesting.

I think the pen could be a strong point for us this year. As always there are a lot of “ifs” but with Escobar, Igarashi, a tweaked Green, a more experienced Parnell, and obviously K-Rod, there is a lot of potential there. The key will be Frankie though, hopefully last year was a fluke and more consistent work helps. His declining numbers are a little concerning but I’m not worried yet.

Krod’s numbers didn’t really decline. yes his ERA was worse. he gave up 4 more BB and k’d 4 less. But he gave up less hits and his WHIP was relatively flat up a measly .02. His Flyball, Groundball and LD percentages were pretty flat and his XFIP (Fielder Independant Pitching on an ERA scale) was 3.78.

I wouldn’t be worried to much about him.

looked good to me. obviously any pitcher from single a on will look good in a small video but this guy looks like he knows what hes doing out there. we sure could use someone to surprise us in that bullpen and be an automatic type guy. seems like most teams find them , maybe this guy is one.

save the wild pitches for bases loaded situations if you want to make the team.

So when these guys are throwing BP at this point, at what percent of their power are they throwing? Are they bringing it at 75%? More%
