Jose Reyes ran the bases today, once complete he smiled and let out a loud, ‘Woah.’
Original Post at 1:45 am:
I have talked with a lot of people here, from broadcasters to reporters to baseball execs, most it would smart to bat Reyes, so to keep him fresh throughout the season.
I still feel it makes more sense to just let him be, let him be Jose Reyes: Leadoff Hitter, especially coming off of his last season… but, it’s a topical debate, to say the least.
So, this week’s MetsBlog poll, presented by McFadden’s, announced today they will be opening a new bar in Citi Field, is:
[poll id="356"]
In this post, at various times today, I posted live video of batting practice, including David Wright, Jose Reyes and Jason Bay, as well as a bullpen session from Johan Santana.
I hope you were able to tune in on time and check it out.
Johan Santana threw a bullpen session today, pitching to Rod Barajas.
…i sat roughly 15 feet away from the mound, live-streamed it here on MetsBlog.com… i hope you were able to tune on time to watch it… Dan Warthen essentially stood in the batter’s box, calling each pitch, yelling, “Foul Ball, Double in the Gap, Strike One, etc,” and they treated it like an actual inning… he took a break, talked to rod and warthen, then returned for another inning…
Here are some photographs:

Here is some video:
The players took the field, and started gathering in a large group and talking.
Johan Santana jogged out, and called over Jose Reyes to have a private talk.
I would love to know what he had to say to him.
Here is video of a chilly, quiet, windy morning at Tradition Field:
David Lennon of Newsday says Perez, Pelfrey, Maine and Fernando Nieve will all throw batting practice today, while Santana will throw a side session.
Updated at 8:55 am:
The team is scheduled to have a private meeting with Jerry Manuel and the coaching staff this morning, which should wrap up around 9:30 am, after which the team will take the field for it’s first official workout, where the team will mostly focus on running the bases and defensive fundamentals.
…by the way, from what i can gather, Interior Defense means how they play defense, like where to be before the pitch is thrown, who’se covering what base during specific plays, as opposed to the act of actually catching the ball…

It’s 45 degrees here, and it’s a clear, dry, windy, 45, for the first official, full-team workout, which should get started in an hour or so.
I’m here in the media room, preparing questions for a pretty significant interview, which I will hopefully discuss on this blog later in the afternoon.
Yesterday, Wilson displayed gloves up and down the parking lot for players to test out. Today, it’s Max Bat, who has dozens of roller bags emptying out of a box truck.
I believe Johan Santana, Oliver Perez, John Maine and Mike Pelfrey will all throw bullpen sessions today on the main bullpen, and so I should be able to live stream it with much better quality, because I’ll be able to get up a bit closer to the mound.
Rod Barajas arrived to Mets camp yesterday, for the first time this Spring.
In a report for the Star-Ledger, beat reporter Brian Costa explains why the Mets are hoping a Barajas-Henry Blanco platoon will benefit the pitching staff.
“I’m not going to knock the guys we had last year,” Dan Warthen told Costa. “But when we have two guys that umpires are comfortable with and the pitching staff is comfortable with and these guys have requested – some of our bigger-name guys – I’m hoping it makes a huge difference.”
…i believe he’s alluding to Johan Santana and blanco, which probably explains why the Mets jumped to sign blanco so early… he and johan worked well together in Minnesota, and they’ve known one another for years… from what i can gather, blanco is probably going to be johan’s personal catcher… nevertheless, the word is, blanco and barajas are serious about whipping the team’s younger pitchers, i.e., everyone but johan, in to shape… they’re both ‘smart, aggressive generals,’ and have no problem going out to the mound to get everyone back on the same page…
According to Adam Rubin of the Daily News, Barajas had been eying the Mets all off season.
To read more about the Mets catchers, including audio quotes from Barajas and Jerry Manuel, check out Eddie Coleman’s blog for WFAN.com.
To learn about Barajas’s low catcher ERA, read Patrick Flood at Exile on 126th Street.
Lastly, to learn more about Santana’s connection to Blanco, read David Waldstein’s excellent report for the New York Times, where he explains why, “Citi Field Could Become Venezuela North.”
This morning, I interviewed Pat Misch, who I wanted to talk to about his similarity to Tom Glavine, and how he works on command.

Congratulations to Toby Hyde, from MetsMinorLeagueBlog.com, who has started his new job as the Director of Broadcasting and Communications for the Low-A Savannah Sand Gnats.
He will also be doing play-by-play for the Gnats radio broadcasts.
“As far as this site goes, my new job is only good news,” Hyde explains. “The demands of working for a team during baseball season means my time will be precious, but the worthwhile tradeoff will be a unique and sharper insight. Obviously, I look forward to developing an even deeper relationship with the Mets players and staff.”
…i’m so happy for toby, who did broadcasting for the Iowa Cubs from 2004 to 2008…
…i know he’s been wanting to get back behind the mic, and so this must be a great day for him… nice work, toby… have fun…
